The Brookings Swim Club is coming down the stretch in the regular season as it participates in its final meets of the year.
The BSC took part in three meets over the past three weeks, finishing fourth at the 12 & Under South Dakota State Short Course Championships, sixth at the 2023 South Dakota State Short Course 13 & Older State A Championship Meet and had Cody Vertin and Ava Humphrey take part in the Speedo North Sectional Spring Championships.

WATERTOWN – Brookings finished fourth as a team at the 12 & Under South Dakota State Short Course Championships from Feb. 24-26. The BCS also won the team percentage awards at the event, which were given to the team that scored the most points after each individual swim.
The boys’ ages 9-to-10 200-yard free relay team of Jensen Weber, Emmett Morehouse, Timothy Jin and Wyatt deBlonk took home first place with a time of 2:09.80 while McKinley Schwab took home first place in the 100-yard backstroke and 100-yard fly in the Girls ages 11-to-12 division.
Schwab had a big day for Brookings picking up a second-place finish in the in Girls ages 11-to-12 50-yard fly (29.06 seconds), a third-place finish in the ages 11-to-12 100-yard international medley (1:08.97) and a third-place finish in the ages 11-to-12 freestyle (58.57 seconds) while also winning the second place high-point award for her division.
Other second-place finishes included Jensen Weber in the ages 9-to-10 100-yard backstroke and Quinn Humphrey who finished second in the girls age 8-and-under 25-yard breaststroke (22.71 seconds) and 50-yard breaststroke (48.57 seconds).
Weber picked up a third-place finish in the boys’ age 9-to-10 50-yard backstroke (35.69 seconds), Humphrey finished third in the girls 8U 50-yard freestyle (38.46 seconds) and deBlonk finished third in the Boys ages 9-to-10100-yard freestyle (1:10.19).

Vertin took home first place in the Boys age 17 & older 100-yard breaststroke (56.03 seconds), the 400-yard international medley (4:02.92), the 200-yard international medley (1:51.22), the 200-yard breaststroke (2:01.54) and the 200-yard backstroke (1:52.61).
Ernest Ting also recorded a second-place finish in the boys’ ages 15-to-16 200-yard breast strike (2:15.52).
Brookings finished third in nine different events at the championships. The team of Sofia Gonzalez, Kendall Schmit, Kyra Bowne, and Kalla Foerster finished third in the girls’ ages 13-to-14 800-yard freestyle relay (8:47.17), the ages 13-to-14 200-yard freestyle relay (1:47.93) and the ages 13-to-14 400-yard freestyle relay (3:59.20).
Foerster also finished third in the girls’ ages 13-to-14 200-yard freestyle (2:03.51) and the girls’ ages 13-to-14 400-yard international medley (5:00.55).
Ava Humphrey finished third in the girls’ ages 15-to-16 100-yard breaststroke (1:09.25), Trevin Lounsbury finished third in the boys’ ages 13-to-14 400-yard international medley (4:48.91) and the boys’ ages 13-to-14 500-yard freestyle (5:22.19).
