BROOKINGS – A Chevy caught fire on Sunday, according to the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

The fire was reported at 1:06 p.m. Sunday and occurred near 471st Avenue and 220th Street, south of Brookings, Assistant Sheriff Scott Sebring said.

“The Brookings County Sheriff’s Office along with the Brookings Fire Department responded to the above location for a vehicle on fire,” Sebring said.

“Upon arrival, crews discovered a (2005) Chevy Impala had a fire in the engine compartment. A deputy was able to extinguish the fire with a fire extinguisher until fire crews arrived and extinguished the remainder of the fire,” Sebring said.

“It is unknown what caused the fire, but the driver stated she was driving when the vehicle began to smoke. Damage of the incident is estimated to be $1,500,” Sebring said.
