BROOKINGS — An alcohol compliance check in Brookings on Wednesday caught two violators — Edgebrook Golf Course and the Brookings Softball Association.

Edgebrook is owned by the city through the Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department and the clubhouse where beer is sold is operated by a third-party contractor. According to the city’s website, the Southbrook Diamonds concessions stand is jointly operated by the city and the Brookings Softball Association and provides snack food and beverages, including beer, during a variety of events. It is generally run by volunteers.

The two city facilities were among nine locations checked by the Brookings Police Department using an underage buyer. Edgebrook is at 1415 22nd Ave. S., while the softball association is at the Southbrook Softball Complex on 22nd Avenue South.

In response to a Register inquiry, Parks, Recreation, and Forestry Director Kristin Zimmerman, whose department oversees both locations, sent the following statement:

“The city is deeply concerned about the incidents that occurred last night at Edgebrook Golf Course and the Southbrook Softball Fields, where a contractor and a volunteer sold alcohol to an underage individual. Ensuring the safety and well-being of our Brookings community is our top priority, and we take this matter very seriously.

“Upon learning of the incident, the city immediately launched a thorough investigation to ascertain the details and circumstances,” Zimmerman continued. “We are cooperating with law enforcement and regulatory agencies to ensure a comprehensive understanding of what occurred and to ensure proper protocols are followed by those contracted or volunteers when serving alcohol.

“We sincerely apologize for these incidents and assure you that we are taking all necessary actions to prevent them from happening again. The safety of our residents, especially our youth, is paramount, and we are committed to upholding the highest standards in our operations whether it is City staff, contractors, and/or volunteers.”

According to the South Dakota Department of Revenue, fines and penalties can be imposed on licensees, clerks and those who furnish alcohol to underage individuals. Complete details can be found online at https://tinyurl.com/ytr9dejf.
