Cossacks run win streak to seven games

Sioux Valley improved to 8-1 on the season after the Cossacks swept a doubleheader against Colman-Egan on Tuesday afternoon. The Cossacks won game one 13-5 and followed that with a 6-3 victory in game two.

Cossacks run win streak to seven games

VOLGA – Sioux Valley improved to 8-1 on the season after the Cossacks swept a doubleheader against Colman-Egan on Tuesday afternoon. The Cossacks won game one 13-5 and followed that with a 6-3 victory in game two.

It was the seventh-straight victory for the Cossacks and they’ll host a doubleheader against Deuel on Thursday, starting at 4 p.m. Colman-Egan dropped to 2-5 and plays at Oldham-Ramona/Rutland on Friday at 4 p.m.

Game One

Sioux Valley 13, Colman-Egan 5

An 11-run third inning from the Cossacks proved to be the difference in the first game.

Neither team scored in the first inning and Sioux Valley led 1-0 after the second. Abby Axtell led off the bottom of the second with a single and Zayle Lantgen followed that with a single of her own. Morgan Lemme then came to the plate with one out and drove Axtell home with a ground out to give the Cossacks a one-run lead heading into the third.

The Hawks then gained the lead in the top of the third as they scored three runs with two outs. Addy Giegel drew a walk and then scored on a fielder’s choice from Maebe Groos. Lanie Mousel then hit a triple and Kaitlyn Taggart hit her home with a triple to make it 3-1 heading into the bottom of the inning.

Sioux Valley then blew the game open. Kassidy Smith started the big inning with an RBI single. Axtell then came to the plate with two runners on and hit a two-run double. The Cossacks scored two more runs on an error Lemme hit an RBI single to make it 7-3. Two more runs from errors and RBI singles from Ameilia Jacobson and Axtell made it 12-3 heading into the fourth.

The Cossacks stretched their lead to 10 in the bottom of the fourth. Lemme reached base on an error and then made it to third on a passed ball. She then scored on a ground out from Katie Richarz to make it 13-3 heading into the fifth.

Colman-Egan was able to score two runs in the top of the fifth. Giegel led off the inning with a single and then scored on a double from Groos. Groos would score on an error to make it an eight-run game but the game would then come to a close after three-straight outs from the Hawks. 

Axtell was 3-for-3 with four RBIs. Lemme and Lantgen were each 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Amelia Jacobson was 1-for-2 with an RBI and Ella Jacobson was 1-for-3 with an RBI. 

Groos was 1-for-3 with two RBIs for the Hawks. Taggart was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Lanie Mousel was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Giegel was 1-for-2.

Each team had a pitcher pitch a complete game. Lantgen pitched for the Cossacks and gave up five runs, four earned, on five hits with five strikeouts and one walk. Lanie Mousel pitched for the Hawks and gave up 13 runs, nine earned, on nine hits with two strikeouts and one walk.

Game Two

Sioux Valley 6, Colman-Egan 3

The Cossacks scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead and then shut down the Hawks in the final half inning of game two.

Colman-Egan jumped out to a 2-0 lead. K Williams hit a one-out single and then came around to score on a single from Lanie Mousel. Lanie Mousel then scored on a single from Giegel and that gave the Hawks a two-run advantage.

Sioux Valley answered with three runs of its own in the bottom of the inning. Amelia Jacobson hit a one-out single and then stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball. She then scored on a ground out from Axtell and C Uecker followed that with an RBI double to tie the game. Lemme hit Uecker home on a single and that gave the Cossacks a 3-2 lead heading into the second.

The Hawks tied the game in the top of the second. B Bowen hit a one-out single and then scored on an error to make it 3-3. Neither team then scored in the third.

Richarz led off the bottom of the fourth with a walk and later scored on an error to give the Cossacks a 4-3 lead. The Hawks then walked two batters with the bases loaded to make it 6-3 heading into the top of the fifth. 

Groos led off the fifth by getting on via an error but Williams grounded into a double play in the next at bat. Lanie Mousel then popped up and that gave the Cossacks a doubleheader sweep.

Lemme and Amelia Jacobson were each 1-for-2 with an RBI. Uecker was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Smith and H Mousel were each 1-for-2.

Lanie Mousel was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Giegel was 1-for-2 with an RBI. Bowen was 1-for-2. 

The two teams each had a pitcher pitch a complete game again. Axtell gave up three runs, one earned, on five hits with three strikeouts and no walks. H Mousel gave up six runs, five earned, on four hits with three strikeouts and five walks.
