VOLGA – Sioux Valley posted its second consecutive win, beating McCook Central/Montrose 28-6 in a key high school football matchup Friday night.
Jaxton Schiller ran 16 times for 120 yards and Dalton Hanson added 20 carries for 108 yards with a touchdown.
Quarterback Parker Puetz got the Cossacks on the board on their opening series, capping a long drive with a 3-yard TD rush with 3:59 to go in the first.
The Fighting Cougars answered early in the second as Raygen Randall hit Martin Flood for a 10-yard touchdown toss.
Sioux Valley retook the lead midway through the second after Puetz connected with Lane VanderWal for a 33-yard score – the home team’s lone completion of the game. The duo hooked up again on the two-point conversion to make it 14-6.
Neither team scored in the third and the Cossacks pulled away in the fourth.
Tayte White found the end zone from a yard out and added the two-pointer with 9:50 remaining.
Hanson added a 1-yard plunge with 7:52 left to provide for the final margin.
Schiller, Hanson and White each had 10 tackles to pace the Sioux Valley defense, which recovered a trio of fumbles.
Sioux Valley held a slight edge in total offense – 289-279, including 256-243 on the ground.
MCM’s Blake Gessner picked up 126 yards on 16 rushes. Randall was 3-of-4 for 36 yards.
Cole Grasma made 19 tackles and Gessner added 10.
Sioux Valley (3-3) heads to Elk Point-Jefferson and McCook Central/Montrose (2-4) travels to Bridgewater-Emery/Ethan next week.
