Driver hits wheelchair; two taken to hospital

BROOKINGS — Two people went to the hospital after being hit by an 89-year-old driver Monday afternoon.

The accident was reported at 1:20 p.m. Monday and occurred in the 2300 block of Yorkshire Drive, said Lt. Derrick Powers.

Nelda Holden, 89, of Brookings, was driving a 2015 Ford Fusion and exiting a parking lot.

“A male was pushing a female in a wheelchair, crossing the exit to the parking lot. She did not see them and struck the wheelchair, which caused the wheelchair to tip over and the male and female both fell to the ground,” Powers said.

The man was a 62-year-old Brookings resident and the woman was a 63-year-old Brookings resident. Both were complaining of pain and the ambulance came to the scene and transported them to the Brookings emergency room to be evaluated, Powers said.

No charges have been filed against the driver, he added.
