BIG STONE CITY – Becky Holtquist, rural Big Stone City, announces her District 4 candidacy for South Dakota House of Representatives.
Holtquist, a Democrat, will face Republican incumbents Fred Deutsch and John Mills in a race for two District 4 seats in the state House. The general election is Nov. 3.
Holtquist, a Sioux Falls native, is a retired teacher and coach. She taught and coached in Clear Lake for four years before moving to the Ortonville school district, where she taught health and physical education and coached various sports for 36 years.
Holtquist’s husband Tim is a farm business manager consultant and a former board member of POET ethanol and a past national lobbyist for the ethanol industry. They have three adult children: Ashley, New York City; Adam, Brookings; and Erin, Denver, and five grandchildren
Holtquist is an avid outdoorswoman – hiking, camping and kayaking, to name a few of her activities. She is also an avid reader.
Since retirement, her volunteer activities include tutoring and mentoring non-English speaking residents of the area and working at the Ortonville hospital.
Her main goal as a legislator will be to work to keep improving South Dakota’s educational system – start treating teachers as professionals and giving the education system the resources needed to provide the best education possible for the state’s children.
Holtquist’s goal in the Legislature to work with all for all, with understanding and an open mind and with no biases or prejudices. She said her honesty and common sense will make her an outstanding state representative.
