Jackrabbits take two of three against St. Thomas

BROOKINGS — South Dakota State baseball took two out of three games against St. Thomas at Erv Huether Field over the weekend.

The Jackrabbits won the first game of the series on Saturday, 9-5. The two teams then played a doubleheader on Sunday and split the two games with St. Thomas winning game one 11-6 and SDSU took the second game 4-3.

SDSU is now 17-20 overall and 9-8 in the Summit League. The Jacks are in fourth place in the Summit League, but have the same amount of wins in conference play as first place St. Thomas (9-5) and second place North Dakota State (9-6). Omaha is in third place with a conference record of 10-8.

The Jacks will host Dakota Wesleyan on Wednesday at 3 p.m. and then play a three-game series with Oral Roberts Friday-Sunday in Brookings.

Saturday

SDSU 9, St. Thomas 5

SDSU fell behind 5-0 in the first game of the series but then outscored the Tommies 9-0 in the final four and a half innings.

The Tommies broke a 0-0 tie with two runs in the top of the third. UST got two runners on via walks and then each runner was sent home after a double from Max Moris.

St. Thomas added three more runs in the top of the fifth. Matthew Maulik came to the plate with two outs and two runners on and hit one over the right center wall to make it 5-0.

SDSU responded with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Reece Anderson walked with one out and Jordan Sagedahl followed with a single. Anderson and Sagedahl advanced to second and third on an error and Cael Frost then hit both runners home with a single of his own to make 5-2 heading into the sixth.

The Jacks cut the lead to 5-3 in the sixth inning. Jess Bellows walked to begin the inning and came around to score on a throwing error by the third baseman.

SDSU tied the game in the seventh. Cade Stuff walked with one out and Luke Luskey was hit by a pitch. Bryce Ronken then came in as a pinch hitter and he hit Stuff and Luskey home with a double. That made it 5-5 heading into the eighth.

After Anderson popped up to lead off the inning Sagedahl was hit by a pitch and Frost was walked. Dawson Parry then came to the plate and launched one over the right field wall to give SDSU its first lead of the day.

SDSU added an insurance run before the inning was over. Thatcher Kozal pinch ran for Luskey after he got on with a single and Kozal scored on a Davis Carr single to make it 9-5 heading into the ninth.

Alex Clemons stayed on the mound in the ninth after pitching the eighth. He gave up a single and walked a batter but was able to force Maulik into a pop up to end the game.

Parry was 1-for-3 with three RBIs and Frost was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Ronken was 1-for-2 with two RBIs and Carr was 1-for-5 with an RBI. Sagedahl was 2-for-3 and Luskey and Jess Bellows were each 1-for-4.
Nic McCay pitched the first seven innings of the game for the Jackrabbits. He gave up five runs, two earned, on five hits with nine strikeouts and three walks. Clemons pitched two shutout innings and gave up three hits with two strikeouts and one walk.

Sunday

Game 1: St. Thomas 11, SDSU 6

St. Thomas built a lead again in the second game of the series and this time the Tommies hung on for a win.

The Tommies scored four runs in the top of the third. Back-to-back singles from Moris and Maulik gave them a 2-0 lead. Both Maulik and Moris then scored on an error to make it 4-0.

SDSU got one run back in the bottom of the inning. Anderson hit a one-out single and came around to score on a Parry double, making it 4-1 heading into the fourth.

UST added three runs in the fifth to make it 7-1. The first run of the inning came on a double from Brigs Richartz. Joe Roder walked and then scored on a Zan VonSchlegell ground out. Richartz then scored on a Vos single.

The Jacks scored another run in the bottom of the fifth. Daegen Schramm was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and then scored on a double from Sagedahl to make it 7-2.

The Tommies extended their lead to 9-2 in the top of the seventh. Mikey Gottschalk was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Tanner Recchio hit a single to send VonShlegell home.

SDSU scored three runs in the bottom of the inning. Frost came to the plate with the bases loaded and hit a double to left field and that made it 9-4. Ronken then hit a ground out with the bases loaded and that scored Sagedahl.

The Jacks scored another run in the bottom of the eighth. Matthew Werk hit a double to lead off the inning and then scored on a double from Anderson, making 9-6 heading into the ninth.

UST added two insurance runs in the top of the ninth. Recchio hit an RBI single and then scored on an error to make it 11-6 heading into the bottom of the ninth. Adam Benes was walked and Kozal was hit by a pitch with two outs, but Werk lined out to the shortstop to end the game.

Anderson was 3-for-4 with an RBI and Frost was 2-for-5 with two RBIs. Sagedahl and Ronken were each 1-for-4 with an RBI and Parry was 1-for-5 with an RBI.

Jake Goble started the game for SDSU and picked up the loss. He pitched four and a third innings and gave up seven runs, five earned, on seven hits and with two strikeouts and three walks. Will Kent pitched two thirds of an inning and gave up no runs and one hit.

Alex Koep pitched an inning and two thirds and gave up two earned runs on three hits with two strikeouts and one walk. Jack Krueger pitched two innings and gave up two unearned runs on four hits with two strikeouts and one walk. Brady Hawkins pitched a third of an inning and faced one batter and got him out.

Game 2: SDSU 4, St. Thomas 3

The Jacks rallied from a 3-2 deficit and took the final game of the series.

SDSU got on the board first in the opening inning as Sagedahl hit a solo homer over the center field wall. The Tommies then tied the game in the top of the second as Richartz hit a home run to right field.

The Jacks regained the lead in the bottom of the third. Anderson walked with one out and then came around to score on a Ronken single, making it 2-1 heading into the fourth.

The Tommies then took the lead in the top of the fifth. Vos walked to start the game. He advanced to second on a ground out and then took third base after an error on a pickoff attempt. He then scored on a ground out and Ben Vujovich singled and advanced to second on a steal. Vujovich would then score on a throwing error, making it 3-2 St. Thomas.

SDSU tied the game in the bottom of the inning. Frost doubled to lead off the inning and then came around to score on a fly out from Bellows.

The Jacks then took the lead in the eighth inning. Werk singled to lead off the inning and advanced to third on a ground out from Schramm and a single from Anderson. Sagedahl then flew out to left field and that sent Werk home and ended up being the game-winning run.

Clemons pitched the final inning after getting the final two outs in the eighth. He walked two batters but then struck out Vujovich to end the game.

Sagedahl was 1-for-4 with two RBIs. Ronken was 2-for-4 with an RBI and Bellows was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Frost was 3-for-5 and Benes was 1-for-3.

Owen Bishop got the start for SDSU and pitched the first three innings. He gave up one earned run on one hit with three strikeouts and two walks. Dylan Driessen pitched four and a third innings and gave up two runs, one earned, on three hits with four strikeouts and two walks. Clemons didn’t give up any runs or hits and had three strikeouts and two walks.
