I would like to comment on the “Have You Heard” column in the Jan. 10 paper.
Our three South Dakota Republican representatiaves, John Thune, Mike Rounds and Dusty Johnson, were asked about their pay during the federal government shudown.
Dusty Johnson said he would defer his pay.
This shows me a man who has character.
In our school system, we teach a program called Character Counts, which has six pillars – trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship.
I expect to see these values in all of our representatives, but Dusty followed through with these values when he deferred his pay. He is a good example of the people who live in South Dakota.
I was sadly not surprised by our two senators, Thune and Rounds.
When it comes time for South Dakotans to vote, I hope we all look at candidates, presidential and local and evaluate their character using the six pillars of Character Counts. Good job, Dusty.
