New name at Brookings Domestic Abuse Shelter

Posted

As many of you know, the Brookings Domestic Abuse Shelter endured a hard loss with the passing of our then executive director, Margo Dempsey on March 12, 2023. Now just over a year later we have some exciting news!

We have taken the steps to start the process of changing our name from "Brookings Domestic Abuse Shelter Board” to "Margo's Place," a safe place for victims fleeing their homes due to domestic violence, sexual assault, human trafficking and stalking. While our name has changed our mission will remain the same; to empower survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking through 24-hour emergency shelter and medical response, crisis intervention, advocacy, legal advocacy, peer support, education, and referral information/networking with area agencies.

All services will remain free and confidential. The name change, in honor of Margo, was not one that was made light heartedly. The staff and the board of directors of BDAS all spent time weighing in on this decision.

With the new name will come a new logo. While we have used the helping hand and house logo, to welcome victims over the years, we will now use the "Tree of Life" which symbolizes a connection to everything around us and is a powerful reminder that our own happiness and health are intertwined with the happiness and health of all living things.

It is also a symbol that was very dear to Margo's heart as she had a love and admiration for the beauty of mother nature. The leaves in the tree that we have chosen represents the awareness colors to several of the issues we strive to bring the most awareness to. Margo had been a dedicated intern, advocate, co-director, and Executive Director at BDAS for 27 years. We recognize that the shelter has had so many exceptional board members and advocates over the past 37 years, that all deserve so much credit for the success that we have had as a non-profit in Brookings. With that being said, we want to thank everyone who has helped us through your support, by volunteering, donating, or being part of the board or an Employee here at the shelter. We would not be able to continue without the support of our community.
