No need for alarm: Police training at vacant Hillcrest

BROOKINGS — The old Hillcrest Elementary School is going to be the site of police training starting Wednesday morning, so don’t be alarmed if you see more officers and activity taking place in and near the school.

The training will continue through Friday, according to information from a post the Brookings Police Department made on Facebook. The school is at 304 15th Ave., and is scheduled for demolition in the near future, having been replaced by a new version of Hillcrest just to the east of the old Hillcrest.

The training is expected to focus on many areas, Police Chief Michael Drake told the Brookings Register in an email interview.

“Realistic situational police scenarios,” he wrote. “Domestic disputes, emotionally disturbed persons, escalation, crisis negotiations, tactical operations, incident management, use of force, officer safety and survival, active threat response, medical and emergency response, and other skillsets not mentioned already.”

He added that training will take place starting in the morning and continuing into the evening hours, wrapping up by 9 p.m.

“However, employees may still remain on site after this to clean up from the day or setup for the next day’s training,” Drake added.

He noted the training is intended to benefit Brookings and its residents.

“The goal is to better understand and respond to the needs of Brookings, as well as ensure (officers’) own safety and the safety of those around them,” Drake said.
