On Easter, people celebrate new life

Welcome to Holy Week.

I hope many of you have the opportunity to celebrate the Easter Triduum (three days). Traditionally, the Triduum begins with a Thursday evening service (Maundy Thursday), reaches its apex at the Easter Vigil on Saturday evening, and closes with Easter Sunday. Although these are three events, they are best viewed as one extended service. Maundy Thursday reminds us of Jesus’ life of service (observed through foot washing) and the new commandment he gave to his disciples: “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” (John 13.34-35; NRSVUE).

The scripture readings during the Easter Vigil Service remind us of the mighty acts of God culminating in Jesus’ death and resurrection. All too many still believe Jesus’ crucifixion served the purpose of satisfying God’s wrath concerning our sinful nature. Many have problems with that image of God. I prefer the image of God portrayed in the Parable of the Prodigal Son. I prefer to see the crucifixion as the natural outcome of violence perpetrated upon an innocent person who threatened the religious status quo. As an alternative to the way of violence,

Jesus revealed, and invited us to participate, in the way of love. Jesus came bringing the gift of new life, of abundant life.

At the close of the Vigil, and on Easter Sunday, we celebrate Jesus’ resurrection (not resuscitation) from the dead. Jesus Christ has conquered sin, violence, and death; his loving actions invite us to the fulness of life which is to be found in love. If we believe (trust) in the life of Christ, and live as Jesus lived, we enter into new life, not only now, but also in the age to come. We are Easter people! Jesus’ love, invitation to new life, and our participation in the same, are cause for celebration! May you have a blessed and holy Easter! Alleluia! He is risen!
