VOLGA – Parker went on a 12-0 run late in the third quarter en route to a 45-37 win over Sioux Valley in a Big East Conference girls’ basketball game Monday night at the Cossack Center.

The Pheasants moved on top for good – 26-25 – on Karley Peters’ layup at the 3:39 mark of the third. She later added a free throw.

Grace Leberman canned a 3-pointer, before Sydney Berens had back-to-back buckets. Raelin Jurgens capped the spurt with a pair of foul shots, making it 36-25 with 7 seconds remaining in the period.

Miakken Vincent beat the buzzer with a trey to cut the deficit to 36-28 entering the final period.

Sioux Valley scored six consecutive points to pull within 40-35 with 1:24 to play, but that would be as close as the home team would get.

“Parker returned all five of their starters from a year ago and we wanted to come out and compete,” said Cossack coach Jamie Granum. “We had a tough one we thought we should have won against Arlington (47-44 on Saturday). We were a little flat and when a team is flat, I always think that’s on me to get us rolling and I didn’t do a very good job on Saturday.

“We came today and we wanted to take away a couple of their really good players – (Raelin) Jurgens and (Grace) Leberman. We packed the paint a little bit and said hey, if Parker has five, six other girls that can knock down some 3s we were going to go out of here with a 30-point loss.

“Our kids stayed disciplined, they stayed focus. There’s just a lot to like about this team – it’s young, it’s coachable; and we have some talent coming up, too. So we’re not going to be down for long. I hope everybody stays with us.”

Vincent posted a double-double of 18 points and 11 rebounds to go with four assists and three steals for the Cossacks.

Peters paced Parker (2-2, 2-1) with 12 points. Brianna Berens had nine points and seven boards, while Sydney Berens contributed eight points and Leberman seven.

Sioux Valley (1-3, 1-1) plays host to Beresford to open a doubleheader Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
