SIOUX FALLS – South Dakota State claimed back-to-back Summit League "Food Fight" titles by collecting more than 2,650 pounds of food to edge South Dakota and claim its eighth crown in 12 years.
In total, league members collected nearly 7,000 total items that equaled more than $17,000 in retail value.
Monies collected during the campaign will provide for than 5,000 total meals and this year's average donation amount of $65.44 was around $10 more per donation from year's past.
The Coyotes finished second and amassed 2,253 total pounds. The Coyotes were followed by Denver (657 pounds) and league newcomer Kansas City, which accumulated 250 pounds to claim fourth. North Dakota collected more than 133 pounds of food to round out the top five producers.
Total amounts were calculated from non-perishable food, cash and online donations. This year's abbreviated-collection period totaled 6,045 pounds during a two-month online campaign.
In the program's 13 years, 972,711.51 pounds of food have been secured for local Summit League communities.
Summit League Commissioner Tom Douple and the league staff would like to thank all the donors, SAAC members and campus staffs for all their hard work over the past two months in making this campaign a success. The SAAC will look to bring back a year-long campaign that will include an online and in-person donation options in 2021-22.
