VOLGA — Sioux Valley softball extended its win streak to eight games with a win over Deuel in the first game of a doubleheader, but the Cardinals won the second game to snap the win streak.

Both games were pitching duels as the Cossacks won the first game 4-2 and the Cardinals won the second game 4-1. There was a rain delay in the third inning of the second game.

Sioux Valley is now 9-2 on the season and plays at Sisseton on Tuesday at 5 p.m.

Game 1: Sioux Valley 4, Deuel 2

A two-run walk-off triple from Savana Guthmiller gave the Cossacks the win in game one.

\Neither team scored in the first two innings and Sioux Valley struck first with a run in the bottom of the third. Summer Guthmiller reached on an error to begin the inning. Riley Stirling then came to the plate with two outs and hit a single through the middle of the infield that sent Summer Guthmiller home and gave the Cossacks a 1-0 lead heading into the fourth.

The Cardinals would answer with two runs in the top of the fourth. The first run came on a wild pitch and an RBI single gave Deuel the lead.

However, the Cossacks would tie the game in the bottom of the inning. Katie Richarz walked with one out and then advanced to third on a single from Summer Guthmiller. Richarz then scored on a passed ball to make it 2-2 heading into the fifth.

The Cardinals went down one-two-three in the top of the final inning. Stirling walked to begin the bottom of the inning and Abby Axtell followed by reaching on an error. That’s when Savana Guthmiller came to the plate and became the hero in the first game.

Game 2: Deuel 4, Sioux Valley 1

The Cardinals no-hit the Cossacks in the second game. However, Sioux Valley did score a run in the first inning. Kassidy Smith walked to begin the inning and then advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt from Amelia Jacobson. Stirling then struck out but it was a dropped third strike and that allowed Smith to score, making it 1-0 heading into the second.

Deuel evened the score in the top of the second. The Cardinals hit a double to lead off the inning and then tied the game on a dropped third strike. They added two more runs in the third. The first run came from an RBI single and the next one came from an RBI double. The final run of the game for Deuel came in the fifth and it was on a ground out.
