BROOKINGS – One man’s trash could be another man’s treasure.

All those unwanted items piling up in your basement and garage don’t necessarily have to head to the landfill, but if the crowds patrolling Brookings boulevards in the next week aren’t interested, the city will take it off your hands.

Monday, April 3, is the first day residents can start placing items on the curb for the city’s Spring Cleanup 2017.

All items must be out by Sunday, April 9. City crews will start the curbside pickup on Monday, April 10.

The city will be canvassing the town one time only for curbside pickup. Brookings residents are encouraged to take advantage of the free dumping by hauling as much of their smaller items to the landfill as possible. This will allow city crews to focus on faster removal of the remaining large items. All guidelines must be followed or your material will not be picked up.

The Brookings Regional Landfill will be open from 7:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. Monday through Friday, April 3 to April 28. Special Saturday hours will be from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on April 8 and April 15.

The last day of free dumping at the landfill will be from 8-11:45 a.m. Saturday, April 29.

The city will announce on its website, social media and radio outlets which sections are being picked up.

The schedule crews plan to follow is:

• Section 1: Railroad tracks to Sixth Street and from Main Avenue to 16th Avenue

• Section 2: Front Street to Sixth Street and from Main Avenue to Western Avenue

• Section 3: Sixth Street to 11th Street and from Medary Avenue to Western Avenue

• Section 4: Sixth Street to Eighth Street east of Medary Avenue

• Section 5: Railroad tracks to Sixth Street from 16th Avenue to 22nd Avenue

• Section 6: South of railroad tracks from Medary Avenue South to 22nd Avenue South

• Section 7: Railroad tracks south to city limits from Medary Avenue west to city limits

Paint Exchange Program

The annual Paint Exchange Program will be held on Saturday, April 8, at the Brookings Regional Landfill. The citizens can bring in latex paint from 8 a.m. to noon to be recycled. Then from 1-4 p.m., the paint will be available to the general public free of charge.
