Virginia “Ginny” (Griffin) Hatch (80) passed away peacefully on July 5, 2024, in Kansas City, Missouri.
Ginny was born on Sept. 3, 1943, in Chicago, Illinois to Mary and Bob Griffin. She grew up in Sioux Falls, SD, with her brothers, Jim and Jack, and sister, Joan. Ginny attended Cathedral High School and was an avid tennis player from an early age.
Ginny graduated from South Dakota State University with a bachelor's and master's degree, which is where she met her husband, Sherwood.
Sherwood “Hatch” and Ginny were married on Aug. 20, 1965, and spent most of their married lives in Brookings where they raised two children, Ripper (55) and Amy (49). Ginny loved to read, and this passion followed her into her profession - an English teacher at Sioux Valley HS in Volga, SD, just outside of Brookings.
Hatch and Ginny were staples at the Hillcrest Tennis Courts each summer and devout members of the Catholic Campus Parish until they retired to Kansas City in 2010 to be closer to their grandchildren, Lily, Sydney and Max.
Ginny continued to play tennis well into her 70s. While in Kansas City, Ginny spent time volunteering with the Assistance League and enjoyed socializing with new friends at the Staley Farms community and Holy Family church.
Ginny is survived by her husband, two children, brother, Jack, and three grandchildren. A funeral service will be held at Holy Family Church (919 NE 96th St., KC, MO) on July 17, at 10 a.m.
