Wayne Avery seeks three-year term on Brookings City Council

Wayne Avery has announced his candidacy for Brookings City Council.

Avery, currently serving in his third year on the council, is running for reelection to one of the open three-year terms on the April 9th election ballot.

“I am looking forward to continuing my service to the community,” Avery said.

He said he feels that he has learned about the intricacies of city government by meeting extensively with department heads and staff.

“Learning first-hand about the various entities that make up city government has been invaluable and has guided my decisions as a council member,” he added.

He currently serves as an ex-officio member of the Brookings Municipal Utilities Board.  That appointment and previous service on the Brookings Planning Commission, are assets that he brings to the council when it reviews past planning efforts, and seeks future growth possibilities. That knowledge and experience is significant when moving projects forward.

Serving on the council for the past three years, he has seen significant strides forward in the strategic planning and funding for workforce housing, mental health facilities, childcare and food security.

An SDSU graduate, Wayne has a strong background in economic development through his 45-year career in banking. He retired as a Senior Business Banker from Dacotah Bank in December 2020.

He worked with large and small businesses to help them create, build and grow.  Avery worked with developers to plan and build homes and apartment complexes, as well as assisting many small businesses with growth projects.  He is familiar with how large projects are funded, and how to build consensus and align partners.

Avery has a history of community service, and has had leadership roles in the Advance Foundation, Kiwanis Club, Pheasants Forever, United Way and volunteers weekly at Feeding Brookings.

Married for 33 years to his wife Shari, they have enjoyed so many of the opportunities, events and lifestyle that Brookings offers.

“I have been very engaged in efforts to ensure the Brookings continues to be a community where you can bring your dreams,” Avery said. “I want to continue that commitment as a council member.”
