11B: Seahawks edge Warriors

BROOKINGS – Brady Hawkins threw for a trio of touchdowns and Bridgewater-Emery/Ethan came up with a late goal-line stand to beat Winner 21-14 in a matchup of unbeaten teams in the Class 11B final Friday afternoon.

Hawkins was 10-of-15 for 152 yards and also ran for 77 yards. He went 3-for-3 on PAT kicks and made 12 tackles on defense.

Hawks was the Jim Langer MVP and Most Outstanding Back.

The Warriors racked up 286 rushing yards, including 123 by Trevor Peters, who scored twice.

Peters got things going with a 6-yard TD run midway through the first and Brady Fritz found Ethan Vesely for the two-point conversion.

Hawkins had touchdown tosses of 7 yards to Eric Gustafson 5 seconds before halftime and 38 yards to Chase Arend a the 9:41 mark of the third.

Winner pulled even on Peters’ 9-yard scoring rush with 5:17 to go in the third.

Hawkins connected with Jonah Hofer for a 33-yard touchdown with 8:30 remaining in the game. The PAT kick made it 21-14.

The Warriors turned the ball over on downs at the BEE 14-yard-line; however, Hawks fumbled following a 23-yard pickup. Phillip Jorgensen forced it and Fritz recovered the loose ball at the BEE 16.

Winner later had a first-and-goal at the 1-yard-line but came up empty on four consecutive runs, turning it over on downs with 1:46 to play.

The Warriors forced a punt and got the ball back with 38 seconds. Arend sealed the victory with an interception soon thereafter.

BEE’s Grant Andrews had 11 tackles and Arend nine.

Peters paced the Warriors with eight stops.

Winner’s Oscar Pravecek was named Most Outstanding Lineman.

Notes: BEE allowed just 14 points in four playoff games. … Bridgewater-Emery/Ethan improved to 4-2 in title games as a co-op but won its first 11-man title. The Seahawks were victorious in 9AA in 2010, 2011 and 2013. They lost in the 11B final the last two seasons. Emery/Ethan won 9AA titles in 2001, 2003 and 2007. It was second in 9AA in 2009 and in 9A in 1993. … Bridgewater was the 1981 9B runner-up. … Winner is 7-8 in championships. The Warriors dropped to 4-1 in 11B after coming out on top in 2009, 2012, 2015 and 2016. The won 11A crowns in 1981, 1987 and 1989 and were second in 11A in 1986, 1990, 1992, 1993, 1995, 1998 and 2008.
