The Rangers swept a pair of league games with Aberdeen over the weekend, downing the Cougars 4-3 on Saturday and then posting a 5-2 win on Sunday to move into second place in the SDAHA standings with a 7-3-0-1 record. Brookings travels to Sioux Center on Saturday.

14U Rangers sweep Aberdeen to move into 2nd in standings

The Rangers swept a pair of league games with Aberdeen over the weekend, downing the Cougars 4-3 on Saturday and then posting a 5-2 win on Sunday to move into second place in the SDAHA standings with a 7-3-0-1 record. Brookings travels to Sioux Center on Saturday.

• Brookings 4, Aberdeen 3

The Rangers led 4-3 after a period and then hung on for the win as the second and third were scoreless for both teams.

Raya Hesser opened the scoring off an assist from Addie Ramlo. Savannah Barber sandwiched a pair of unassisted goals around a Jadyn Kuehl tally, which was set up by Barber, for the one-goal lead that held up.

Brookings held a 26-16 edge in shots as Aletha Baker collected 13 saves for the win in goal.

• Brookings 5, Aberdeen 2

Kiran Vugteveen tallied an unassisted goal in the first period as the Rangers led 1-0 after one.

Barber lit the lamp with an unassisted goal in the second as Brookings led 2-1 through two.

Vugteveen earned a hat trick after she sandwiched a pair of goals around a Ramlo tally as the Rangers pulled away for the win. Baker and Barber set up the first Vugteveen score and the second was unassisted as Vugteveen helped on Ramlo’s goal.

The Rangers outshot Aberdeen, 22-19, as Heidi Merriman finished with 17 saves for the win in net.

PEEWEE A

The PeeWee A Rangers shut out Watertown, 6-0, on Friday before splitting a pair of game at Aberdeen on Sunday – losing in overtime, 4-3, before posting an 8-3 win in the second game.

• Brookings 6, Watertown 0

The Rangers led 2-0 after a period as Jacob Peterson and Breck Hirrschoff scored with Owen Schneider and Hirrschoff setting up Peterson and Schneider picking up the assist on Hirrschoff’s goal.

In the second, Zach Struck scored off a Chase Karch setup before Schneider lit the lamp off a Peterson assist.

Eli Johnson and Luke Honkomp notched goals in the third period with Hirrschoff earning both assists.

Brookings held a 38-5 edge in shots as Addison Ronning earned the shutout win in goal.

• Aberdeen 4, Brookings 3, OT

The Rangers led 2-1 after a period as Jack Merritt scored off a Peterson assist before Struck tallied an unassisted goal.

In the second, Schneider scored an unassisted goal as the score was tied 3-3 through two.

After a scoreless third, the Cougars scored in overtime to pull out the win.

• Brookings 8, Aberdeen 3

Schneider tallied back-to-back goals as Hirrschoff assisted on the first to open the scoring. Struck found the back of the net off another Hirrschoff helper before Hirrschoff lit the lamp off a Merritt assist as the Rangers led 4-1 after one.

In the second, the Rangers built their lead to 6-1 after Hirrschoff scored off a Schneider assists before Schneider tallied an unassisted goal.

Struck opened the third-period scoring with the assist going to Peterson before Hirrschoff scored an unassisted goal for his hat trick.

Brookings outshot the Cougars, 38-31, as Ronning collected 28 saves for the win in net.

PEEWEE B

The PeeWee B Blue Rangers posted a 2-1 record over the weekend after shutting out Watertown, 10-0, on Friday, before splitting a pair of games with Aberdeen on Saturday – winning 8-6 and then falling, 7-4.

• Brookings 10, Watertown 0

The Rangers dominated play, outshooting the Lakers, 44-6, as Egan Jensen earned the shutout win in goal with six saves.

Brookings scored six goals in the first period as Garrett Bothe stared the onslaught off an assist from Aidan Austreim. Gage Peterson scored back-to-back goals, assisted by Gavan Stewart on the first, before Jack Lee lit the lamp off a Wyatt Carlson helper. Brayden Klingbile then found the back of the net with an unassisted tally as Jordan Raatz closed out the first-period scoring with an unassisted goal.

After a scoreless second, the Rangers tacked on four more goals in the third. Raatz notched his second unassisted goal, followed by a Peterson tally set up by Carlson. Carlson then scored twice – the first unassisted and the second helped by Stewart – for the final margin.

• Brookings 8, Aberdeen 6

The Rangers led 4-1 after a period as Raatz sandwiched a pair of unassisted goals around an unassisted tally by Peterson. Peterson scored his second goal, set up by Austreim, to close out the first.

In the second, Stewart found the back of the net with an unassisted tally as the Rangers led 5-4 through two.

Koen Beinhorn scored in the third period with Bothe getting the assist before Raatz provided for the final margin with an unassisted hat trick goal.

Brookings held a 34-29 edge in shots as Jensen finished with 23 saves for the win in goal.

• Aberdeen 7, Brookings 4

The Cougars led 4-0 after a period and 6-2 through two as both teams finished with 27 shots with Jensen collecting 20 saves in the loss.

In the second period, Raatz lit the lamp before Peterson found the back of the net.

Peterson added two more goals in the third period to complete a hat trick, with Lee assisting on the first one.

SQUIRTS

The Squirt Black Rangers went 1-2 on Saturday in Yankton, defeating Sioux Center 5-3 before dropping 4-2 decisions to both Fremont and Sioux City.

• Brookings 5, Sioux Center 3

Riley Linstad’s unassisted tally gave the Rangers a 1-0 lead after a period.

In the second, Thor Kahler chalked up an unassisted goal, followed by an unassisted tally by Cody Jacobson. Talon Hyde found the back of the net off a Masen Holen assist, and then, Jacobson notched his second goal off another Holen setup as Brookings led 5-2 through two.

Sioux Center scored the lone goal of the third as the Rangers held a 16-8 edge in shots with Ryder Anderson collected five saves for the win in goal.

• Fremont 4, Brookings 2

Fremont led 1-0 after a period before Linstad scored back-to-back unassisted goals in the second to keep the Rangers within 3-2 after two.

But the Flyers scored twice in the third for the win as they outshot Brookings, 14-12, with Anderson notching 10 saves in the loss.

• Sioux City 4, Brookings 2

The Rangers led 1-0 after a period as Hyde lit the lamp off a Holen assist.

In the second, Linstad tallied an unassisted goal as Sioux City scored twice for a 2-2 deadlock through two periods.

Sioux City added two more goals in the third for the win as Brookings held an 18-9 advantage in shots with Anderson finishing with five saves in the loss.
