BROOKLYN PARK, Minn. – The Brookings 16U Outlaws softball team took home second place at the 2022 NAFA Northern Nationals held in Minnesota from July 28 through July 31.
The Outlaws, coached by Bill Kratz, finished tournament play with a record of 8-2.
Brookings opened pool play with an 11-3 win over Minnesota Ice, then defeated Kishwaukee Valley, 10-2, to move to 2-0 in their pool.
The Outlaws then posted an 8-0 shutout of Minnesota Whirl Gold to complete pool play with a 3-0 mark.
Brookings would advance into the top bracket, the Platinum Bracket and open bracket play with a narrow 1-0 win over the Minnesota A’s on Friday evening.
The Outlaws returned to the field Saturday morning and continued to score win, earning a 5-1 win over Marengo Softball, a 4-1 victory over ISA Black, then a 5-0 triumph over the Richfield Rebels.
On the final day of the tournament on Sunday, Brookings opened with a 2-0 win over Badger Blitz Birling to move into the championship game.
Brookings would drop their first game of the tournament in the first championship, 7-4 to the Midwest Sluggers, and in a winner-take-all second championship game, the Sluggers again prevailed by a score of 11-2.
Brookings finishes the year with a record of 29-12-1.
