MITCHELL – Alexandria beat Garretson 2-0 to take home the title as the Class B State Amateur Baseball Tournament concluded Sunday at Cadwell Park.

Alexandria wins Class B State Title in Mitchell

MITCHELL – Alexandria beat Garretson 2-0 to take home the title as the Class B State Amateur Baseball Tournament concluded Sunday at Cadwell Park. 

Tyson Gau tossed a gem in the final, allowing just five hits while striking out eight and walking one in the shutout.

He surrendered just one run in two appearances – 16 innings – in the tourney.

The Angels moved to 4-2 all-time in championship matchups, with all the games occurring in the last seven years.

Alexandria beat Winner-Colome 7-3 and Garretson defeated defending-champion Canova 5-0 in the semifinals Saturday.

The Bluejays outscored their opponents a combined 37-3 in the tourney – two of the runs were earned.

Sunday – Championship

Jordan Gau shut the BlueJays out.

The Angels opened the scoring in the fifth

Peyton Smith singled and advanced on Cole Wenande’s sacrifice. Gau hit a sharp grounder to second, and an error on the play allowed Smith to sprint home.

Alexandria added an insurance run in the ninth as Reid Smith stroked a single, advanced on Jarrod Zens’ sacrifice, moved to third on Peyton Smith’s single and scored on Wenande’s sacrifice fly to left.

Gau, John Greicar and Peyton Smith each went 2-for-5.

Garretson’s Nick Bruning was 2-for-3.

Derek Fischer was the losing pitcher after allowing two runs – one earned – on nine hits and a walk with seven strikeouts.

Saturday – Semifinals

 Alexandria 7, Winner-Colome 3

Chris Marek hit a game-changing grand slam and added a solo shot to help the Angels get back in the final.

Alexandria scored six runs in the top of the seventh inning.

Jarrod Zens singled to lead off the big frame and quickly scored on a triple by Peyton Smith, who finished 2-for-5.

Cole Wenande and John Greicar drew walks. Jordan Gau tied things up with an RBI single with one away.

And then Marek, who finished 3-for-5, stepped into the batter’s box.

He liked the first pitch he saw, driving it to left for the grand slam, which made it 7-3.

Former South Dakota State standout Trever Vermeulen threw six innings to earn the victory. He allowed three runs on five hits with four strikeouts and a pair of walks.

Brady Nolz worked three frames to tally the save, retiring nine of the 10 batters he faced.

Marek hit a 1-2 pitch over the fence in left to lead off the second.

The Pheasants scored all their runs in the fourth.

Dillon Lambley worked the count full before homering to left to knot things up with none away in the inning.

With two outs, Zach Harter, Austin Richey and Kelly O’Bryan (RBI) singled to make it 2-1. After Jeff Harris walked, Reed Harter was beaned to force in Richey and put Winner-Colome ahead 3-1.

Conner Hopkins took the pitching loss. He gave up seven runs on nine hits and five walks with a quintet of strikeouts in eight innings.

Derek Quame scattered nine hits in a complete-game performance to post the shutout. He struck out five and walked one, throwing 114 pitches.

The BlueJays turned a trio of double plays and took advantage of three errors, as just two of their runs were earned.

In the second, Dustin Steckler and Jesse Brockhouse (bunt) reached on errors by Gang second baseman Tim Gassman and pitcher Derek Miller.

Austin VanHove and catcher Brady Bonte followed with back-to-back sacrifice flies.

In the fifth, VanHove, Bonte and Bruning singled to push the margin to 3-0. Brad Ulmer added an RBI single with one out.

Steckler, who finished 2-for-4, singled to lead off the sixth, moved to second on Brockhouse’s sacrifice, stole third and scored on an error on Bonte’s batted ball

The Gang’s Jared Miller finished 3-for-3 with a double.

Derek Miller suffered the loss after giving up four runs – two earned – on five hits and a walk with three strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings. Justin Miller gave up one run – unearned – struck out five and walked one over the final 4 2/3.
