VOLGA – The Sturgis junior varsity squad won the Cossack Avalanche with 243 team points on Saturday. Dell Rapids was second at 147.5 and the Mitchell JV (109) ended up third.
Sioux Valley (88) took fifth, Flandreau (74) seventh and Kingsbury County (63) ninth.
Cossacks
Alex Stein (113), Seth Heindenreich (145) and Michael Stevenson (195 pounds) each placed second.
Stein pinned Sioux Falls Roosevelt JV’s Christopher Hoang in 1:22 and Yankton JV’s Corbin McNatt in 1:05 before getting pinned in 2:38 by Dell Rapids’ Andrew Weiland in the final.
Following a first-round bye, Heindenreich pinned Mitchell JV’s Marquis Reyelts in 3:13 and Kingsbury County’s Dylan Geary in 2:26. He dropped a 9-2 decision to Mitchell JV’s Tyson Degen in the title bout.
Stevenson pinned Yankton JV’s Jonah Marsh in 35 seconds to open the day and then earned a 17-2 technical fall over Spearfish’s Teygan Werlinger in 5:28. After getting pinned in 1:17 by Kingsbury County’s Kain Gilligan, Stevenson put the Quarriers’ Dylan Anderson on his back in 29 seconds.
Fliers
Flandreau put three wrestlers in the top two, including 285-pound champion Braden Peters, who won all three of his matches by fall.
He pinned Sioux Falls Roosevelt JV’s Eric Michelson in 1:44, Hamlin/Castlewood’s James Mickey in 21 seconds and Deuel’s Gabe VanWormer in 27 seconds.
Caleb Dietrich (132 pounds) and Chase Reed (220) both finished second.
Dietrich received a first-round bye before pinning Mitchell JV’s Quincey Young in 5:13 and then picking up an 11-0 major decision over Dell Rapids’ Sage Ottoson. Sturgis JV’s Paul Pulling pinned Dietrich in 3:15 in the championship.
Reed pinned Sioux Valley’s RJ Perry in 1:48 and Hamlin-Castlewood’s Logan Sikkink in 1:42. He was pinned in 46 seconds by Mitchell JV’s Beau Foote in the title bout.
Knights
Kain Gilligan won all four of his matches by fall in the 195-pound weight class to take home top honors.
He pinned Dell Rapids’ Dylan Anderson in 42 seconds, Yankton JV’s Jonah Marsh in 1:48, Sioux Valley’s Michael Stevenson in 1:17 and Spearfish’s Teygan Werlinger in 4:00.
Matthew Steffensen was runner-up at 120.
He pinned Yankton JV’s Ethan Yasat in 5:57 and Flandreau’s Tanner Christenson in 3:47, but dropped a 12-5 decision to Sturgis JV’s Traylin Martin in the final.
Owen Kerkvliet went 1-1 with a pin to place second at 170.
