BROOKINGS – Austin cashed in on a power-play chance to beat the Blizzard, 5-4, in overtime on Wednesday at Larson Ice Center.

Brookings built a 4-0 lead – scoring twice in the first period and then added two goals in the second before the Bruins rallied.

Trailing by four goals in the second period and facing a power play, Austin notched a short-handed goal before scoring again on a bank shot off the boards that ricocheted off the Blizzard goaltender to close within 4-2 through two.

The Bruins added two more goals in the third to force overtime before tallying the winning goal 4 1/2 minutes into the extra time for the Central Division win.

Derek Hammer got the scoring going for the Blizzard midway through the first period off an assist from Doug Larson before Vince Marino tallied an unassisted goal late in the frame as Brookings led 2-0 after one.

Haiden Karnick and Josh Boyer lit the lamp with unassisted goals early in the second for the four-goal advantage, but Garrett Dahm got the Bruins on the board with a short-handed goal off an assist from Travis Kothenbeutel to make it 3-1.

Less than a minute later, Devon Fields fired a long shot that bounced off the boards and then was ruled a goal when Benjamin Beck misplayed the bounce and the puck crossed the goal line.

The Bruins pulled within one goal just 64 seconds into the third when Evan Cholak lit the lamp, and then, Dante Zapata tied the game at the 7:37 mark with the assist going to Cholak.

In extra time, Dan Petrick tallied an unassisted, power-play goal to lift the Bruins to the win.

Austin outshot the Blizzard, 39-33, and cashed in on 1-of-4 power-play opportunities while Max Schilling came up with 18 saves in relief to get the win as the Bruins improved to 17-10-1-4.

Brookings dropped to 14-16-2-1 and sits in sixth place in the Central standings with 31 points.

On Friday, the Blizzard travel to Austin for a 7:05 p.m. game at Riverside Arena. The teams return to Larson Ice Center on Saturday for another division standoff. The puck drops at 7:05 p.m.
