BROOKINGS — Authorities still have not released any meaningful information in a death investigation that began 10 days ago in Brookings County.

The Brookings County Sheriff’s Office and South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation sent an update to their first news release early Friday morning, stating that the investigation was ongoing and that the public was not in danger.

The original release, sent on Aug. 10 after inquiries from The Register, only confirmed that a death investigation began on Aug. 8. Follow-up questions were not answered.

The Aug. 18 release reads as follows:

The Brookings County Sheriff’s Office and South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation continue to investigate a death in Brookings County. All deaths are investigated thoroughly, and we want the public to know the investigation is ongoing. Due to this, further details cannot be released at this time. Furthermore, we want to state the public is in no danger.

Anyone with any information about this case can contact the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office at 605-696-8300 or contact Crimestoppers anonymously by visiting www.brookingsareacrimestoppers.com or by calling 605-692-STOP (7867).

Later Friday, Brookings County State's Attorney Dan Nelson released this statement:

The Brookings County Sheriff’s Office, Brookings Police Department, and the Division of Criminal Investigation continue to pursue multiple leads in the investigation. Until those leads have been investigated, the facts and circumstances surrounding the decedent’s death will remain undisclosed. Our local law enforcement agencies remain diligently focused on these efforts. Forensic and digital evidence has been gathered and is currently under review. Due to the multiple leads in this investigation, additional time and resources are required to ensure a complete and thorough investigation. On behalf of all law enforcement, we appreciate your patience in this matter.
