Badgers polish off 8-0 regular season, DVC title

ARLINGTON – Arlington/Lake Preston capped an undefeated regular season and won the Dakota Valley Conference football title outright with a 34-12 victory over Colman-Egan on Friday night.

Devon Heuer had a hand in five touchdowns.

The senior ran nine times for 39 yards and three TDs while going 5-of-6 for 113 yards and a pair of scores through the air.

The Badgers outgained the Hawks 354-160 in total yards of offense, including 241-14 on the ground.

Gavin Holland ran 17 times for 141 yards and Miguel Campos picked up 63 yards on four attempts.

Heuer plunged to paydirt from a yard out to open the scoring.

Colman-Egan pulled within 8-6 in the second period as Chase Hemmer hit Camden Schmidt for an 8-yard scoring strike.

Heuer answered with touchdown runs of 4 and 3 yards to put ALP on top 22-6 at halftime.

Heuer and Byron Bumann helped the Badgers put the game away after the break, connecting for TD tosses of 13 yards in the third quarter and 17 yards in the fourth to make it 34-6.

The Hawks’ Nate Tolley hit Ryan Voelker for a 23-yard touchdown after that to provide for the final margin.

Tolley was 9-of-14 for 126 yards. Eli Bowen ran 19 times for 76 yards. Voelker had four catches for 57 yards.

Arlington/Lake Preston improved to 8-0 and Colman-Egan dropped to 6-2.

The Class 9AA and 9B Playoffs kick off Thursday. The Hawks have won titles the past two seasons – 9B last year and 9A in 2016.

 Elkton-Lake Benton 30, Castlewood 26

CASTLEWOOD – Matthew Nibbe scored the go-ahead touchdown on a 5-yard run with 3:27 remaining as the Elks beat the Warriors.

Nibbe finished 11-of-21 for 194 yards with two TDs through the air and also ran for a pair of scores.

Castlewood’s Noah Wiersma opened the scoring with a 3-yard rush 2 1/2 minutes into the game and added the PAT kick.

Nibbe hooked up with Bryson Sik for a 19-yard scoring pass late in the first. Aiden Erickson hit Nibbe on the two-point conversion to put ELB ahead 8-7.

The Warriors’ Brandon Benike connected with Kyler Tvedt for a 32-yard touchdown in the second. Wiersma’s kick made it 14-8 in favor of the hosts.

The Elks answered again with 3:37 left in the second as Nibbe found Sopko for a 16-yard scoring toss and then ran in the two-pointer, leaving ELB with a 16-14 advantage at halftime.

Sopko finished with four receptions covering 77 yards.

In the third, Nibbe found the end zone from 6 yards out and found Sopko on the conversion to push the margin to 24-14.

The Warriors rallied in the fourth as Benike and Wiersma connected for a 48-yard TD with 9:16 to go and a 15-yard score with 4:42 left to give Castlewood a 26-24 lead.

Wiersma rushed 17 times for 108 yards and had four catches for 89 yards. He also paced the defense with 13 tackles and Benike added 10 stops.

Elkton-Lake Benton finished the regular season with a 5-3 record and Castlewood ended up 6-2. The 9AA and 9B Playoffs begin Thursday.

 Deubrook Area 65, Estelline/Hendricks 34

ESTELLINE – Clayton Koppatschek ran for 158 yards and three touchdowns while also throwing for a pair of scores to lead the Dolphins past the Redhawks.

He scored on runs of 44, 37 and 51 yards and had TD tosses of 46 and 21 yards.

Trace Vierhuf had scoring rushes of 5 and 6 yards to go with a 46-yard touchdown catch.

Denton Schwartz had TD runs of 37 and 12 yards.

Estelline/Hendricks finished with 487 yards of offense, including 346 rushing.

Marcus Hausman accounted for 411 yards – 270 rushing with a touchdown and 141 passing with another score.

Zach Loomis found the end zone twice on the ground and once on a reception.

Mason Bury returned a fumble 40 yards to paydirt.

Hausman recorded 10 tackles and Pedro Camberos forced a fumble.

The Redhawks finished the season with an 0-8 mark.

Deubrook Area (5-3) opens the Class 9A Playoffs on Thursday.

 Dell Rapids St. Mary 36, Oldham-Ramona/Rutland 6

DELL RAPIDS – The Cardinals (3-5) closed with a victory to likely earn a spot in the Class 9B Playoffs.

The Raiders ended the year with a 1-7 mark.
