Bandits go 3-2 in Gopher Classic

PRIOR LAKE, Minn. – The Bandits went 3-2 in pool play at the Gopher Classic in Prior Lake, Minn., over the weekend.

 Brookings 4, Mankato National 3

The Bandits fell behind 2-0 in the first inning, but were able to come back and score three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. Jackson Krogman led off the inning with a single. Cole Mahlum then walked and Tyler Kruetner singled to load the bases up. Rhett Zelinsky hit Krogman home on a sacrifice fly. Josh Devine hit a two-out double that allowed Mahlum and Kruetner to score to make it 3-2.

Mankato National tied the game in the fourth inning and Brookings was able to regain the lead in the bottom of the inning. The bases were loaded with one out, when Zelinsky hit a sacrifice fly and that ended up being the winning run.

Jacob Schoon pitched five innings and gave up three runs on six hits with eight strikeouts and four walks. Kruetner pitched two innings and gave up no runs on one hit with one strikeout and one walk.

Devine went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Mahlum went 2-for-3 and Krogman went 3-for-4. Zelinsky went 0-for-2, but had two RBIs.

 Alexandria (Minn.) 9, Brookings 6

Alexandria jumped out to a 9-0 lead and it too big of a hole for Brookings to comeback from. 

Caden Wright pitched 1 2/3 innings and gave up eight runs, one earned, on three hits with one strikeout and three walks. Mahlum pitched 1 1/3 innings and gave up one run on two hits with no strikeouts and one walk. Cayden Jacobsma pitched three shutout innings and gave up four hits with three strikeouts and one walk.

Trevor Berreth went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Parker Rhykus went 1-for-4 with an RBI. Kruetner went 3-for-4 and Jackson Krogman went 0-for-2 with an RBI.

 Brookings 1, Millard West 0

Zelinsky did it all for Brookings against Millard West. He hit a walk-off single and pitched a complete game shutout, giving up four hits with three strikeouts and three walks.  He went 1-for-3 at the plate.

Kruetner went 2-for-3 and Schoon went 2-for-4.

The Bandits jumped out to a 2-0 in the first inning. Schoon opened the game with a single and Mahlum walked. Kruetner was hit by a pitch to load the bases up with no outs. Zelinsky grounded into a double play, but Schoon scored. Rhykus then hit Kruetner home with a single. 

De Pere tied the game in the third inning. Bennet Olson led off the inning with a walk and Zach Ziesmer  reached on an error. Collin Litts sent Olson home after he hit a single and Ziesmer scored on a sacrifice fly from Hunter Towsice.

The Bandits broke the tie in the top of the sixth inning. Rykhus hit single to lead off the inning. Devine hit into a fielder’s choice and Berreth singled. Devine scored by stealing home and Wright hit a single that send Berreth home.

Brookings then picked up an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning. With one out, Kruetner hit a double and Zelinksy hit him home on a single.

Tyler Rukamp hit a single to lead off the bottom of the seventh and Cal Jensen reached on a walk. Berreth was pitching for the Bandits and forced De Pere into three straight fly outs to end the game.

Christian Mediger started the game for Brookings and pitched five innings and gave up two runs, none earned on six hits with no strikeouts and one walk. Berreth pitched the final two innings and gave up no runs on three hits with no strikeouts and one walk.

Wright went 1-for-1 with an RBI and Rhykus went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Zelinsky went 1-for-3 with an RBI.
