Carl Kline stated in a recent opinion piece, “I can’t believe we will ever possess truth,” and likened truth about religion and faith to beauty, stating, “In the same way, truth is a subjective quality.” Kline conflates truth with opinion, confuses objective facts with subjective feelings and personal preferences.

Kline has indicated in previous opinion columns that he objects to Jesus’ statement, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” Jesus continued his statement, as recorded in the verse immediately following that verse, “If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.” Jesus then replied to a request from the apostle Philip, who didn’t yet “get it.” “Philip said, ‘Lord, show us the Father and that will .be enough for us.’” Jesus answered, ‘Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority.

Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves.’” John 14:6-11.

Notice the word “evidence” in Jesus’ statement. Kline has commented, “…a spiritual person will consider evidence in asserting faith!” Well, duh! Why would a person believe and assert any faith or religion that has weak or no evidence? In fact, Bible-believing Christianity is the only religion that has evidence. It would be foolish to believe in Jesus or the Bible without evidence.

What is the evidence that Jesus was stating factual, objective truth, that Jesus is God, and the unique Son of God, as he repeatedly claimed, and has authority to make the claims that he makes?

“In the past God overlooked such ignorance, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent. For he has set a day when he will judge the world with justice by the man he has appointed. He has given proof of this to everyone by raising him from the dead.” Acts 7:30, 31. (The Bible explains that Jesus is fully man and fully God.)

“I passed on to you what I received, which is of the greatest importance: that Christ died for our sins, as written in the Scriptures; that he was buried and that he was raised to life three days later, as written in the Scriptures; that he appeared to Peter and then to all twelve apostles. Then he appeared to more than five hundred of his followers at once, most of whom are still alive, although some have died.” 1 Corinthians 15:3-6.

“For 40 days after his death he appeared to them many times in ways that proved beyond doubt that he was alive. They saw him, and he talked with them about the Kingdom of God.” Acts 1:3.

Peter the apostle said, “For we did not follow cleverly devised stories when we told you about the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ in power, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. He received honor and glory from God the Father when the voice came to him from the Majestic Glory, saying, ‘This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.’ We ourselves heard this voice that came from heaven when we were with him on the sacred mountain.” 2 Peter 1:16-18.

Jesus healed thousands of people in his first appearance on earth. This verse lists one of many occurrences. “A vast crowd brought to him people who were lame, blind, crippled, those who couldn’t speak, and many others. They laid them before Jesus, and he healed them all.” Matthew 15:30.

In addition, the Bible records hundreds of specific, fulfilled prophecies concerning the first appearance of Jesus, and concerning various nations, individuals, and human events.

Jesus said, “Do not believe me unless I do the works of my Father. But if I do them, even though you do not believe me, believe the works, that you may know and understand that the Father is in me, and I in the Father.” John 10:37, 38.

“Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.” John 20:30, 31.
