MINNEAPOLIS – Summit League champion North Dakota State went 0-2 in the NCAA Division I Softball Tournament Minneapolis Regional over the weekend at Jane Sage Cowles Stadium.

Bison go 0-2 in NCAA Tournament

MINNEAPOLIS – Summit League champion North Dakota State went 0-2 in the NCAA Division I Softball Tournament Minneapolis Regional over the weekend at Jane Sage Cowles Stadium.

The Bison fell 3-0 to host and No. 7 national seed Minnesota on Friday and 8-0 in five innings to Drake on Saturday.

NDSU finished the year with a 42-16 record.

Notes: NDSU has won the Summit League Softball Championship 10 times in 11 years of Division I eligibility. The Bison have eight regular-season titles in 12 years since joining the league. … The Bison dropped to 10-20 in NCAA Division I Tournament games. NDSU won the Norman Regional with a 3-0 mark in 2009 but was then swept in a best-of-three super regional.

Saturday

 Drake 8, NDSU 0 (5 inn.)

Nicole Newman (29-7) tossed a one-hit shutout, striking out 13 batters without issuing a free pass, and the Bulldog offense provided plenty of support.

Taryn Pena drew a bases-loaded walk to open the scoring and added a solo home run in the fourth.

Libby Ryan drove in three runs on a pair of singles.

Kennedy Frank finished with a couple of hits, including a two-run triple.

Drake scored two runs in each of the first three innings and one in both the fourth and fifth.

NDSU’s Katie Shoultz broke up the perfect game with a single to lead off the fourth frame.

Paige Vargas (17-5) took the loss after allowing seven runs on eight hits with three strikeouts and two walks in four innings.

The game ended with two outs in the bottom of the fifth.

Friday

n No. 7 Minnesota 3, NDSU 0

Amber Fiser (27-7) threw a three-hit shutout, striking out 12 batters. She hit one batter but faced just three over the minimum.

Katelyn Kemetmueller was hit by a pitch and later scored on a passed ball in the second inning. Maddie Houlihan’s sacrifice fly plated Carlie Brandt, who finished 2-for-3, in the fifth. Hope Brander drew a bases-loaded walk to force in Ali Lindner in the sixth.

The Bison’s Vanessa Anderson, Maddie Hansen and Sam Koehn singled.

KK Leddy (22-9) gave up three runs – two earned – on six hits and five walks with three strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings.
