BROOKINGS – Brandon Valley took advantage of the Bobcats’ first-half turnover issues to post a 59-44 Eastern South Dakota Conference boys’ basketball victory Thursday night at Bob Jostad Gymnasium.
Brookings committed 14 of its 20 turnovers in the opening 16 minutes and shot 26.3 percent. The Lynx weren’t much better at 29.2 percent; however, they were 13-of-18 at the line.
Brandon Valley was up 7-4 after a quarter and 27-10 at intermission.
“You know, a tale of two halves,” said BHS coach Travis Engebretson. “In the first half, we had way too many turnovers and way too many fouls and we just buried ourselves.
“Outside of the fouls in the first half, I think that was our most complete defensive game. I thought we were very good defensively against a very good offensive team.
“And then in the second half, we scored 34 points and that’s the most we’ve scored in a half all season. A lot of that was we were being very aggressive. That’s a good defensive team so, you know, I’m pleased with that but there’s no consolation in losing.”
Brookings shot 57.9 percent in the second half to finish at 42.1 percent for the game.
The Bobcats got as close as 11 points – 29-18 – at the 4:45 mark of the third. It was 41-26 after three.
Brookings closed the gap to 12 points – 48-36 – with 4:31 remaining, before Dawson Johnson and Nate Lear buried 3-pointers on the Lynx’s next two possessions to essentially seal the deal.
Brandon Valley (5-4) used a balanced attack offensively, led by Payton Tietjen’s 13 points. Johnson (seven rebounds) added 10 points, Jaksen Deckert nine, Jackson Hilton seven and Jay Jurgens six.
The Bobcats’ Henry Hammrich scored 14 points and Nick Schefers chipped in with 12 to go with seven boards. The duo combined for 23 points after the break.
Brookings (1-8) is host to Mitchell on Thursday at 7 p.m.
