Bobcats take 6th at Les Tlustos, Schoon captures title at 182

BROOKINGS – Despite not crowning a single individual champion, Pierre had enough depth to win the team title at Saturday’s Les Tlustos-Brookings Invitational at Brookings High School.

The Governors scored 209.5 points to edge Rapid City Central (187), while Mitchell finished third with 170 points.

Brookings totaled 130.5 points, which was good for sixth, as Jacob Schoon captured the only individual championship for the Bobcats.

Schoon won by technical fall, 19-3, in 4 minutes, 22 seconds over Mitchell’s Max Schoenfelder to claim the 182-pound title. After a first-round bye, Schoon won two matches by fall – in 2:26 over Brandon Valley’s Dominic Tucker and in 1:17 over Anthony Knodell of Rapid City Central to move into the championship match.

Logan Bowes placed second at 160 pounds after dropping a 4-2 decision to Damion Schunke of Brandon Valley in the championship match. Bowes opened with a win by technical fall, 19-3, in 4:16 over Washington’s Samuel Randall; won by fall in 1:22 over Vermillion’s Tyson Hage; and moved into the title match with a 4-1 decision over Mason Schoenhard of Harrisburg in the semis.

At 126, Nolan Archer placed third with a 10-4 decision over Dell Rapids’ Canyon Lowman. Archer opened with a 9-2 decision over Cayden Langenhorst of Brandon Valley; won by technical fall, 16-1, in 5:00 over Washington’s Blessing Taniah; but dropped a 3-2 decision to Pierre’s Jace Bench-Bresser. In the wrestlebacks, Archer won by fall in 2:02 over Zach Soderlin of Rapid City Central to move into the third-place match.

Gus Miller placed third at 220 with 3-0 decision over Pierre’s James Lees; opened with a win by all in 1:00 over Jase Lengbehn of Lennox; wbf in 1:09 over Lincoln’s Gavin Marco; lost 4-2 to Mitchell’s Carter Max, 4-2 in tiebreaker; won by fall in 2:19 over Madison’s Daniel Swenson in the consolation semis.

At 138, Jaxon Bowes placed fifth with a 6-0 decision over Harrisburg’s Ryan Hirschkorn. In the opening round, he lost by fall in 2:00 to Dell Rapids’ Trevon Cross, who was wrestling unattached. Bowes then won three straight consolation matches – a 17-0 technical fall in 4:23 over Sabrem Bortnem of Brandon Valley; a 4-3 decision over Dell Rapids’ Max Lamer; and a 3-1 decision over Logan Sparks of Mitchell. He lost a 6-0 decision to West Central’s Landry Knight to drop into the fifth-place match.

Luke Rasmussen placed fifth at 170 pounds after he won a 19-6 major decision over Lincoln’s Jacob Murphy in the fifth-place match. Rasmussen opened with a win by fall in 4:50 over Mitchell’s Tate Ellwien of Mitchell, but dropped a 7-5 decision to top seeded Wyatt Jungclaus of Rapid City Central. In the consolation bracket, he won by fall in 2:17 over Brandon Valley’s Adrian Bain; posted a 16-0 technical fall in 4:43 over Washington’s Bita Patient; but dropped a 14-0 major decision to Ryan Meyer of Harrisburg to drop into the fifth-place match.

At 285, Tucker Christie placed seventh with 3-1 sudden victory over Vermillion’s Zach Brady. In the opening round, Christie won by fall in 1:12 over Austin Abrahamson of Harrisburg, but then dropped a 4-0 decision to Trevor Ellis of Yankton. Christie advanced in the wrestlebacks when Madison’s Brandon Shaw was injured and couldn’t continue the match, but then he lost by fall in 33 seconds to Preston Taylor of Pierre.

Koby Bartels finished eighth at 132 pounds after dropping an 8-5 decision to Dan Momotic of Roosevelt. He opened with a win by fall in 2:56 over Yankton’s Will Pavlish, but lost by fall in the second round to top-seeded Jaetin DeCou of Lennox. In the consolation bracket, Bartels won by fall in 3:30 over Pierre’s Josh Rowse, who was wrestling unattached. He then lost by fall in 3:38 to Teygan Harstad of Brandon Valley to move into the seventh-place match.

On Thursday, the Bobcats take on Aberdeen Central in an Eastern South Dakota Conference dual at the BHS Auxiliary Gymnasium before traveling to Yankton on Saturday for a tournament. Thursday’s match starts at 7 p.m. and competition starts at 9 a.m. in Yankton.
