Bobcats take on 3-3 Tigers

Posted

It’s time for the Bobcats to start looking toward positioning themselves for the postseason.

Brookings is 2-4 on the season and ranked fourth in power points in Class 11AA – which would mean a first-round playoff game at home if the ‘Cats can maintain, or better, their current spot.

But Friday night’s opponent is going to be a tough nut to crack as Harrisburg will enter Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium on a two-game win streak.

Not only have the 3-3 Tigers won their last two games – they beat two teams that had already handed the Bobcats a setback. Last week, Harrisburg bettered Watertown, 31-17, and the week before, the Tigers downed Pierre, 25-20.

Brookings lost 14-13 to the Arrows in Week 4 before dropping a 28-13 decision to the Governors at Hollister Field the following week.

Last week, the Bobcats were shut out in a 51-0 loss to undefeated Sioux Falls Washington at Dykhouse Stadium.

Coach Schmidt on Washington

“I thought we (competed) early, both in the first quarter and early in the second,” said Bobcat head coach Lee Schmidt of his team’s effort against the Warriors. “It’s not that our kids ever quit – they certainly didn’t do that – I thought we lost some composure when they started to get things rolling a little bit. I didn’t think our offensive line played exceptionally well – we made a lot of blocking mistakes – something that should have been fairly easy to block, but we were going against good kids.

“Just again, some things that keep popping up – we’ve actually spent a lot of class time this week along with being on the field – just making sure everybody understands the concepts of what we need to get accomplished in the offensive scheme.

“(We need to) just be more consistent; a lot more reps for the sophomore (quarterback Tanner Shepardson) this week so that way he’s feeling a little more comfortable – he kind of had a tough outing against Washington; he dropped a lot of snaps – we’ve made a few lineup changes. We got out of the Washington game, except for Joey Hanley, pretty clean, so we were fortunate with that.”

Coach Schmidt on Harrisburg

“Harrisburg has a lot of good athletes; they have a really good running back – they’re playing with a backup quarterback just like we are,” said Bobcat head coach Lee Schmidt of the Tigers. “It’s a good matchup for us, especially after two tough weeks. (We’ll) kind of see where we’ve progress to and see how we compete now in these last three games after having some ups and downs early in the season.

“It’s time now to shore things up and get going.”
