SIOUX FALLS – Five Bobcat singles players and all three doubles teams moved into the consolation quarterfinals at the State Boys’ Tennis Tournament on Thursday.

At Flight 1, Jonah Dobbs opened the tourney with a 6-2, 6-2 defeat of Spearfish’s Corey Hoffman. He fell 6-1, 6-3 to Sioux Falls Washington’s Elliot Hartwig in the quarterfinals but bounced back with a 10-1 defeat of Vermillion’s Avery Mollet in a consolation second-round match.

Dalton Rittershaus beat Milbank Area’s Moritz Wortmann 6-0, 6-1 to get things underway in Flight 2. He dropped a 6-4, 6-4 match to Aberdeen Roncalli’s Lucas Goetz in the quarterfinals before getting a bye in consolation play.

At Flight 3, Micah Ardry toppled Sioux Falls Christian’s Andrew Unruh 6-3, 6-2 but fell 6-0, 6-1 to top-seeded Aidan DeBoer, of Sioux Falls Lincoln, in the quarters. Ardry rebounded with a 10-4 defeat of Harrisburg’s Jacob Hanssen in the second round of consolation play.

Alex Miley was a 6-3, 6-2 victor over Spearfish’s Jacob Schlinkert in a Flight 5 first-round match. Rapid City Stevens’ Jackson Ellis held off Miley 6-2, 7-5 in the quarterfinals. The Bobcat senior responded with a 10-4 consolation victory versus Rapid City Christian’s Thomas Postma.

In Flight 6, Dawson Peters tallied a 6-4, 6-2 win against Harrisburg’s Connor Sperber. He fell 6-4, 6-2 to top-seeded Rahul Giri, of Sioux Falls Lincoln, in the quarterfinals before breezing past Vermillion’s Harrison Freeman 10-1 in the consolation bracket.

At Flight 4, Zach Weber fell 6-3, 6-0 to Watertown’s Jordan Urban in the first round and 10-7 to Harrisburg’s Gavin Hatch in a consolation match, and was eliminated.

In doubles, Dobbs and Rittershaus opened with a 6-1, 6-4 defeat of Vermillion’s Joel Van Peursem and Mollet in Flight 1 action. St. Thomas More’s Chase Thurness and Max Vetch dropped Dobbs and Rittershaus 6-1, 6-0 in the quarterfinals, before the Brookings duo bounced back by beating Spearfish’s Boyce Harr and Hoffman 10-0 in the second round of consolation action.

In Flight 2, the Ardry/Weber team beat Harrisburg’s Hatch and Sperber 7-6 (7), 6-1, fell to Rapid City Stevens’ Ethan Reuter and Ben Anderson by a 6-2, 6-1 margin in the quarterfinals and then defeated Sioux Falls Christian’s Slava Zhulin and Unruh 11-10 (9) in a consolation matchup.

Miley and Peters edged Spearfish’s Tim Doerges and Schlinkert 4-6, 6-2, 14-12 to get going in Flight 3. They lost to the top-seeded Raider duo of Jamison Pfingston and Dawson Segrist 6-2, 6-2 in the next round. Miley and Peters beat Rapid City Christian’s Drake Beckloff and Postma 10-8 in a consolation match.

Sioux Falls Lincoln leads the team standings with 390 points, while Sioux Falls Washington (362) is second, Rapid City Stevens (358) third, Sioux Falls O’Gorman (304) fourth and Mitchell (292) fifth.

Brookings is tied for 14th with Madison at 103 points.

The tournament continues today.
