YANKTON – The defending-champion Sioux Falls Brewers and Brandon Valley both went 2-0 on the opening weekend of the Class A State Amateur Baseball Tournament at Riverside Park.

The Cubs fell 8-4 to Brandon Valley in the first round Saturday and beat the Sioux Falls Flying Squirrels 11-3 on Sunday to stay alive.

YANKTON – The defending-champion Sioux Falls Brewers and Brandon Valley both went 2-0 on the opening weekend of the Class A State Amateur Baseball Tournament at Riverside Park.

The Cubs fell 8-4 to Brandon Valley in the first round Saturday and beat the Sioux Falls Flying Squirrels 11-3 on Sunday to stay alive.

Action resumes Friday in Mitchell.

Brookings (20-3) takes on the Yankton Tappers – last year’s runner-up – in an elimination game at 1:30 p.m. at Drake Field.

The Brewers and Rats have a semifinal contest at 1 p.m. at Cadwell Park.

Sunday

 Brandon Valley 9, Rapid City Drillers 4

Mitch Hoover threw six solid innings, giving up one run on three hits with eight strikeouts and a walk, and the Rats got off to a fast start with four runs in the first in the winner’s bracket showdown.

Tyler Field singled with one out in the opening frame and then stole second and took third on a groundout.

Austin Portner and Trey Hubers sandwiched singles around triples by Tony Lanier and Aiden Thomas as BV tallied four consecutive RBI hits to make it 4-0.

Thomas finished 3-for-4, adding a double. Austin Portner homered, singled and drove in three. Tyler Field was 3-for-4. Ray Williams was 2-for-2 with a solo homer and two RBIs. Lanier had two hits.

For the Drillers, Carter Stonesipher (double, two RBIs) and Devin Romey both went 2-for-4.

Devin Romey, who doubled, took the pitching loss after surrendering nine runs – eight earned – on 14 hits with four Ks and three walks over 7 1/3 frames.

Jacolby Anderson hit a grand slam in the opening inning as the Cubs bounced back and kept their title hopes alive. He totaled five RBIs in the game.

Kyle Krogman threw 3 1/3 scoreless innings in relief to tally the pitching win. He gave up five hits with four strikeouts and a pair of walks.

With two outs in the top of the first, Jeff Fish and Sam McMacken walked and Ty Schneider was hit by a pitch to set the stage for Anderson. He drove a 2-2 pitch – the seventh pitch of the at-bat – over the wall in left field for the grand slam.

The Flying Squirrels cut the deficit in half with single runs in the first and third.

Zach Dibble walked and Christian Rasmusson was hit by a pitch. Carter Aides walked with one away and then Jack Revier had an RBI single in the bottom of the first.

In the third, Dibble and Lucas Wilber sandwiched hits around Rasmusson’s walk.

The Cubs added a three-spot in the fourth.

Tyler Kreutner and Austin Koenig singled with one away and Todd Standish walked to load them up.

Jake Anderson and Fish both walked to force in Kreutner and Koenig. McMacken’s fielder’s choice plated Standish to push the margin to 7-2.

Jake Anderson walked to open the sixth and Schneider drew a two-out free pass. Jacolby Anderson picked up his fifth RBI with a single after that, as Brookings led 8-2.

The Flying Squirrels scored their final run in the seventh as Revier singled, Austin Serck walked with one out, Dylan Platt drew a free pass with two away and Dibble had an RBI single.

In the eighth, McMacken and Schneider had back-to-back one-out doubles.

In the ninth, Kreutner drew a leadoff walk and Jake Anderson tallied a two-out single. Kreutner scampered home on a wild pitch and Fish provided for the final margin with an RBI single.

Starter Jake Devine gave up two runs on three hits and four walks with three strikeouts in 2 2/3 innings.

Alex Gauer came in in the seventh and tossed two frames, surrendering one run on two hits and two walks with a pair of Ks. Marcus Heemstra struck out the side in the ninth, working around a pair of hits and a walk.

Sioux Falls’ Brandon Ford allowed seven runs on four hits and five walks with one strikeout in 3 1/3. Wilber and Revier both had two hits.

 Sioux Falls Brewers 7, Yankton 1

TJ Miller went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBIs and a trio of Brewers combined on a two-hitter as the Sioux Falls squad advanced to the second weekend of the state tourney undefeated.

Kalib Mauch allowed one run on two hits and five walks with seven strikeouts in five innings.

Jason Steckley tossed three hitless innings, striking out three and walking a pair. Jeremiah Mauch recorded a 1-2-3 ninth with one punchout.

Hose Martinez had a double and a single. Charlie Dubanoski, who doubled, and Josh Kunzmann drove in runs.

Tappers starter Beau LaFink surrendered three runs – two earned – on five hits and five walks with seven Ks over six frames.

Circus Sports Bar built a 5-0 lead after 4 1/2 innings and then put up a four-spot in the sixth to break things open in the elimination game.

Michael Babcock went 4-for-4 and scored three times to lead the 14-hit attack. Spencer Sudbeck doubled, singled and drove in three. Matt Schooler had three RBIs. Lucas Lorenz and Colton Cox added a pair of hits apiece.

Chad Ellingson gave up two runs on nine hits with four strikeouts and a walk in six innings. Sam Krampf (two) and Chris Wulf (one) combined for three scoreless frames in relief.

Four different Drillers had a pair of hits. Starter Caden Skinner allowed five runs – three earned – on eight hits with three Ks and a BB in five.

Tony Lanier and a pair of relievers combined on a two-hitter as the Rats topped the high-powered Cubs in the first round.

Lanier, a pickup player from the Renner Monarchs who plays for Augustana, gave up four runs on two hits and four walks with four strikeouts in five innings.

Dalton Homeier tossed three scoreless frames, striking out three and walking one. Connor Nagel logged a 1-2-3 ninth to close it out.

The Rats built a 4-0 advantage after 2 1/2 innings.

Ryan Hamilton, who ended up 3-for-5, doubled with two away in the first and quickly score on a hit by Austin Portner, who finished the game 2-for-5.

Trey Huber singled in the second. Aiden Thomas followed with a two-run homer to left. He went 2-for-4.

In the third, Hamilton and Portner recorded one-out hits. Ray Williams’ sacrifice fly to right plated the former to make it a four-run game.

The Cubs got on the board in the bottom of the inning as Kyle Krogman and Austin Koenig drew consecutive walks. Following a flyout and groundout, Jeff Fish stroked an RBI single.

Brandon Valley again responded with four runs in a row.

In the fourth, Jacob Mulder walked with one away and Noah Moon singled. Following a groundout, Tyler Field tallied a two-run single. Hamilton followed with an RBI hit.

Williams doubled in the fifth and later scored on an error to make it 8-1.

Brookings got back in it in the bottom of the fifth.

Koenig was beaned and Standish walked with one out and Fish was hit by a pitch with two away to load the bases.

Sam McMacken had an RBI singled, before Ty Schneider walked and Jacolby Anderson was belted to drive in Standish and Fish, respectively.

Joey Texley (6-1) suffered his first setback of the season on the mound, surrendering seven runs – six earned – on nine hits with a strikeout and a walk in 3 2/3 innings. Anderson allowed one run – unearned – on two hits with seven Ks and a free pass over the final 5 1/3. The Cubs committed three errors.

The West River squad prevailed following a wild ninth inning that saw the teams combine for nine runs.

The Flying Squirrels put up a five-spot in the top of the frame to move ahead 8-5.

The Drillers answered with four in the bottom of the inning to win it.

Chris Stoebner hit a grounder to second with two away and an error on the play allowed Zane Salley and Devin Romey to score to end it.

Zane Salley hit a three-run homer. Ian Krump was 3-for-4 with a two-run homer, a double and three runs scored.

Carter Stonecipher went 3-for-4. He allowed two runs on four hits and eight walks with four strikeouts in seven innings on the hill. Dawson Penticoff was credited with the win in relief despite giving up six runs – three earned – on four hits and four walks in two frames.

Sioux Falls’ Jack Revier ended up 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Trevor Hurley entered in the ninth and allowed four runs – two earned – on two hits and two walks while recording two outs.

Veteran Bryce Ahrendt tossed a seven-hitter and didn’t surrender an earned run. He struck out eight and walked three.

Catcher Charlie Dubanoski drove in a pair. James Borges doubled twice, scored a pair of runs and had an RBI. Brandon Rust added a pair of singles.

Circus Sports Bar starter James Lewis allowed six runs – five earned – on eight hits and three walks with a K in six innings.

Derrick Nelson hit a grand slam and Cooper Davis pitched seven strong innings to lead the Tappers.

Nelson’s big homer made it 7-0 in the seventh inning. Julio Guzziuli added a two-run shot in the ninth.

Davis struck out eight and walked a pair while allowing just two hits. Adam Goodwillie and Gavin Schulz tossed scoreless frames to polish off the three-hit shutout.

The Diamondbacks’ Grayson Skinner surrendered seven runs – two earned – on four hits and six walks with five Ks in seven innings of work.
