BROOKINGS — An event that was sponsored by the Brookings DAV Chapter No 22 and the Korean War Veterans Association Chapter No. 194 was held July 29. The event, the Korean War/Korean Defense Veteran Appreciation Day, took place in Brookings.

Often the Korean War is reported as the “Forgotten War” because it occurred so close to the end of WWII and before the Vietnam War.

The highlights of the day included the presence of Consul Insu Kim from the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea, 13 Korean War Veterans who served in Korea from 1950 to 1954, and several other veterans who served in South Korea after 1954 and a lot of family members.

Approximately 80 people attended the event and there was a Korean War / Defense exhibit set up for everyone to view.

At noon the official program kicked off with the master of ceremonies and organizer of the event, Bob Hill, retired Army Sgt. 1st Class and the local Commander of Brookings DAV Chapter 22.

After welcoming remarks and introduction of guests the 2023 South Dakota Senate Commemoration 809, which honors South Dakotans sacrifices to keep the Republic of Korea free, was read to the gathering followed by Brookings County Resolution proclaiming July 29, 2023, as the Korean War / Korean Defense Veterans Appreciation in Brookings County.

Brookings County resident Magnus Olson was then presented the Ambassador of Peace Medal by Consul Insu Kim. After the presentation Consul Kim gave remarks thanking South Dakotans for their sacrifices and support throughout the years.

He also recognized that South Dakota lost 160 military members during the Korean War and seven from Brookings County. Several veterans brought their extended families to the event.

At the end of the event everyone left realizing that they are “Not forgotten” anymore.
