Community service will take center stage the week of Sept. 11-17 as local area Kiwanis, Lions, Optimist and Rotary clubs address hunger and other community needs during the service organizations’ third annual “Celebrate Community” initiative.

The clubs invite the public to participate in the weeklong event beginning Monday, Sept. 11. A truck donated by Century 21 Krogman & Co. will be parked in the BankStar parking lot, 1301 Sixth St., where community donors may drop off non-perishable food items, baby care supplies including diapers and wipes, personal hygiene items and cleaning supplies.

The donations will be sorted by members of the service clubs and delivered to the Brookings Food Pantry, Harvest Table and Salvation Army on Monday, Sept. 18 for distribution to those in need.

Donations especially needed include: diapers of all sizes and baby wipes; baby food and formula; grooming supplies (shampoo, soap, lotion, deodorant); women’s hygiene products (pads, tampons); household cleaning supplies and paper products such as paper towels and toilet paper. The “Top 10” items requested by the Brookings Food Pantry include: canned fruit, cereal, chili, cream of chicken soup, chicken helper, hamburger helper, chunky soup, grape jelly, peanut butter, pancake mix and syrup. Low-sugar and gluten-free items also are welcomed.

Leadership from the service organizations — Kiwanis International, Lions Clubs International, Optimist International, and Rotary International — have encouraged their clubs and youth programs around the world to work together on projects during one week as part of a joint initiative dubbed “Celebrate Community.”

Issues related to health and wellness, food insecurity and hunger, education and literacy, and the environment will be addressed through community cleanups, food donations and distributions, walks or runs to raise money for specific causes and book collections for children.
