BROOKINGS – The Post 74 Bandits rebounded after a 16-4 loss in Game 1 to come back with an 11-1 win in Game 2 to split an American Legion baseball doubleheader on Wednesday at Bob Shelden Field.

Brookings loses one, wins one

BROOKINGS – The Post 74 Bandits rebounded after a 16-4 loss in Game 1 to come back with an 11-1 win in Game 2 to split an American Legion baseball doubleheader on Wednesday at Bob Shelden Field.

After Post 8 pounded out 16 hits to record 16 runs in a five-inning opening-game win over Brookings, the home team returned the favor with an 11-1 five-inning trouncing in the nightcap.

The Bandits, 6-16 on the season, travel to Huron on Thursday for a 6 p.m. game.

Post 8 put up three runs in each of the first two innings before plating six in the fifth to end the game early via the run rule.

Peyton Zabel gave up all four of the Bandits’ runs as he allowed five hits and walked five to go along with one strikeout in four innings for the win.

Jameson Meyer finished with two hits – including a double – as he drove in two runs while Chris Lerdal also had two hits with an RBI.

Brandon Nelson suffered the defeat after giving up 10 runs – eight earned – on 12 hits and two walks with a strikeout in four frames.

Justin Devine tossed the fifth and allowed six runs on four hits and three walks with a strikeout.

The Bandits jumped out early with six runs in the bottom of the first to take control of Game 2.

After Pierre notched a lone run in the second, Post 74 answered with one in the second; three in the third; and one in the fifth to end the nightcap early.

A leadoff walk to Jacob Devine – followed by three straight singles by Meyer, Akron Prodoehl and Lerdal – got the Bandits going as they led 6-0 after one complete.

When Post 8 notched its run in the second, Brookings matched it, and then, added three in the third on three back-to-back walks, a base-clearing triple by Lerdal and an RBI single by Jacob Schoon.

The Bandits added an insurance run in the when Lerdal reached on an error and then scored on Tyler Kreutner’s double.

Drew Cole went the distance for the home team as he allowed one run on three hits and five walks with four strikeouts.
