BROOKINGS – It was a tough morning for the Bullets in Friday’s opening pool-play game of the Buffalo Wild Wings 16U Tournament at Bob Shelden Field.
Watertown jumped out to 5-0 lead after two innings and then tacked on five more in the fourth to go up by 10 runs before the Bullets got on the scoreboard.
Brookings erupted for four runs in the bottom of the fourth to get back into the game, but the Red Sox responded with four in the top of the fifth to end it early via the run rule.
Carter Merritt started the Bullets’ rally with a walk before Kohji Numata and Kolby Weinberg followed with back-to-back base hits to load the bases. A wild pitch allowed Merritt to score as both Numata and Weinberg moved up a base. Koby Bartels plated Numata with another base hit and then stole second base before Weinberg scored on Cayden Jacobsma’s one-out ground out.
Gabe Wounded Head doubled to drive in Bartels for the Bullets’ fourth run of the frame.
Kane Kurtenbach suffered the loss after giving up five runs on seven hits and a walk over two innings of work. Numata allowed four runs – three earned – on two hits and two walks with a strikeout in one inning. Weiberg tossed the final two frames and gave up five runs – four earned – on six hits and a walk with one strikeout.
The Bullets finished with 10 hits as Jacob Vlaminck singled and doubled, while Bartels, Numata and Weinberg added two hits apiece.
Brookings faces Lennox today in a 7 p.m. pool-play game at Bob Shelden.
Place games go on Sunday, with consolation action going at Erv Huether and championship play at Shelden.
