Carlla Skaggs, 84, of Willmar, died Wednesday, Jan. 23, at Carris Health Rice Hospital in Willmar. Her memorial service will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 26, at the United Methodist Church in Willmar. Visitation will be two hours prior to her service. Burial will be in Clover Leaf Cemetery in Willmar. Arrangements are with Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar. www.hafh.org
Carllanne “Carlla” Helen Skaggs was born to John “Jack” and Esther (Brinkman) Appel in Pipestone, MN on March 15, 1934. She was baptized and later confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Pipestone. She attended high school in Brookings, SD and graduated in 1952. Following her graduation, Carlla continued her education at South Dakota State University, where she also worked in the Registrar’s office. On April 30, 1955, Carlla was united in marriage to Wayne Skaggs in Brookings. Following their marriage, they moved to Willmar where Carlla and Wayne raised their six children, David, Sheila, Scott, Joel, Karen and Kevin.
During her early time in Willmar, she worked at the Chamber of Commerce. As their children grew, Carlla started a business in their home making draperies and custom window coverings, at times calling on help from Esther. Carlla was an avid bowler, golfer and she enjoyed playing cards. She enjoyed hostessing Bridge club and she always had coffee on and some sweet treat available if you stopped by the house. She also enjoyed gardening, canning foods and teaching her children and grandchildren how to bake. Carlla loved to sew and knit, especially making gifts for family and friends. She was a loving wife, mom, grandma and great-grandma.
Left to cherish Carlla’s memory are her children: Sheila (and Jim) Tews of Litchfield, Scott (and Felicia) Skaggs of Grove City, Joel (and Connie) Skaggs of Cannon Falls, Karen Skaggs of Pennock and Kevin (and Helen) Skaggs of Clovis, CA; daughter-in-law, Marcelina Skaggs of Spicer; 12 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, extended family and friends.
Carlla was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Wayne in 2015; sister, EvaDelle Johnson in 2018; and son, David in 2009.
