ST. LOUIS - South Dakota State’s Taryn Christion and Cade Johnson are among the final weekly Missouri Valley Football Conference award recipients after helping lead the Jackrabbits to a 31-28 victory over in-state rival South Dakota in the Nov. 18 regular-season finale in Vermillion.

A junior quarterback from Sioux Falls, Christion was honored as MVFC Offensive Player of the Week after completing 23-of-36 passes for 299 yards and three touchdowns as the Jackrabbits improved to 9-2 and earned the No. 5 seed in the upcoming FCS playoffs. He threw touchdowns of 11 and 69 yards to Jake Wieneke in the second quarter, then found Johnson from 17 yards out with 4:52 remaining in the game to give the Jackrabbits a two-score lead. Christion also ran 13 yards for a first down on a fourth-down play in the third quarter that extended a drive during which the Jackrabbits took the lead for good.

Also in the game, Christion tied the SDSU record for career touchdown passes with 65, equaling the mark previously set by Austin Sumner from 2011-14.

Johnson, a freshman from Papillion, Neb., racked up 124 all-purpose yards with a touchdown en route to being named MVFC Newcomer of the Week. He returned four kickoffs for 85 yards (21.3 average with long of 34 yards) and caught three passes for 39 yards, including his 17-yard touchdown that proved to be the decisive score.

Both Christion and Johnson received their respective awards for the second time this season. Christion also was named Offensive Player of the Week after an Oct. 28 win at Western Illinois, while Johnson was previously honored with the newcomer award following an Oct. 21 victory at Missouri State.

The Jackrabbits received a first-round bye in the FCS playoffs and will host the winner between Northern Iowa and Monmouth in second-round action Dec. 2 at Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.

Other MVFC weekly honors went to Western Illinois senior linebacker Brett Taylor (Defense) and Youngstown State freshman wide receiver Samuel St. Surin (Special Teams).
