BROOKINGS – The ‘Chutes scored 23 runs on 19 hits in a doubleheader against Renner Thursday afternoon in Junior Legion action. The hot offense led to a sweep of the doubleheader.

'Chutes sweep doubleheader with hot offense

BROOKINGS – The ‘Chutes scored 23 runs on 19 hits in a doubleheader against Renner Thursday afternoon in Junior Legion action. The hot offense led to a sweep of the doubleheader.

Game 1

 Brookings 13, Renner 3 (F/5)

The ‘Chutes scored 13 runs in the first three innings and came away with the win in five innings due to the 10-run rule.

Brookings scored three runs in the first inning. Breck Hirrschoff hit a two-run double. He later scored on an Owen Schneider sacrifice fly to make it 3-0.

The ‘Chutes then scored five runs in the second inning. Justin Cofell hit an RBI single and Hirrschoff followed that with a two-run single. Nathan Lease hit an RBI double and scored on a Carter Wright single to make it 8-0 after two.

Renner scored two runs in the top of the third, but Brookings responded with five runs of its own in the bottom of the inning. Cofell hit a two-run single and Parker Winghart scored on a Lease ground out. Zach Struck then hit a two-run double to make it 13-2. Renner scored one run in the fourth, but none in the fifth and the game ended,

Cofell pitched a complete game for Brookings. He gave up three runs, one earned, on three hits with five strikeouts and one walk. He was 2-for-3 at the plate.

Austin Clark went 3-for-3. Hirrschoff and Struck were each 2-for-3. Lease was 2-for-4.

Game 2

 Brookings 10, Renner 6

Brookings got out to an early lead once again in game two and didn’t look back.

The ‘Chutes scored one run in the first inning on an RBI double from Cofell. Brookings then scored three runs on passed balls in the second to make it 4-0 after two.

Renner would respond with three runs in the top of the third. Brookings then scored four runs in the bottom of the the inning. The ‘Chutes scored all of the runs on passed balls 

Renner would cut the lead to 8-6 in the top of the fourth, but Brookings scored two runs of its own in the bottom of the inning. Hirrschoff scored on an error by the shortstop and Matt Nordmeyer hit an RBI single to make it 10-6. Neither team scored in the final three innings.

Nordmeyer got the start for Brookings and pitched the first four innings. He gave up six runs, three earned, on seven hits with three strikeouts and one walk. Winghart pitched the final three innings. He gave up no runs on one hit with four strikeouts and two walks.

Hirrschoff was 2-for-3 and Schneider was 1-for-2. Cofell, Nordmeyer and Rocklyn Dauphinais each went 1-for-3.

The ‘Chutes are now 9-6 and play a doubleheader against Brandon Valley on Monday. The first game starts at noon.
