Cossacks open postseason hosting Chamberlain

It’s playoff time and the Sioux Valley football team is hoping to have a deep run this season. The No. 4 seeded Cossacks are set to host No. 13 seeded Chamberlain in Volga tonight at 7 p.m.

Sioux Valley has won their last five games and went 7-1 in the regular season. Their lone loss was 21-12 defeat against the No. 2 seed Bridgewater-Emery/Ethan. Chamberlain only played seven games this season and went 2-5. The Cubs’ two wins came on back-to-back weeks against Miller/Highmore-Harrold and Bennett County. Chamberlain lost to top-seeded Winner 52-14.

“[Chamberlain] is big. They’re strong. They’re pretty organized and a pretty good team who hasn’t played a whole schedule. We’re looking forward to have them come to town on

Thursday,” said Sioux Valley head coach Dan Hughes.

The Cossacks had a pretty impressive season on the offensive side of the ball. They averaged 29.75 points per game. Their offense has especially been clicking during this five-game winning streak where they’ve scored 30 points or more in four of the games. Hughes said his offense will need to step up if they want to win.

“We’re going to have to attack the whole field. We have to put the ball in several different places and be able to execute at a high level and play fast and play physical,” he said.

Sioux Valley is coming off of its best performance of the year defensively as they held Garretson to three points last weekend. The Cossacks won that game 14-3. Hughes said Chamberlain is tough to defend though because of their size up front.

“On defense we’re going to have to stop their running back. They’re big and physical. They average about 260 pounds up front, so we’re going to have to be able to stop the run and go from there,” Hughes said.

The winner between Sioux Valley and Chamberlain will face either Elk-Point Jefferson or Mt. Vernon/Plankinton. Sioux Valley came from behind to beat EPJ in the regular season, but Hughes said his team isn’t thinking about the next round. He said they need to take it one game at a time.

“We have to improve as a team. We have to be able to execute at a high level and we have to focus on doing things as best as we can,” Hughes said.
