Cossacks qualify for state

DELL RAPIDS – Sisseton’s Nate Nielsen was medalist and Aberdeen Roncalli claimed the team title in the Region 1A Boys’ Golf Tournament on Monday at Rocky Run.

The top three teams and top 29 individuals qualified for the state tournament.

The Cavaliers shot 324. Sisseton was second at 329 and Sioux Valley placed third with a 337 total.

Madison (343) was fourth and Dell Rapids (367) fifth. The Bulldogs had five individual qualifiers and the Quarriers four, as both teams are still eligible to win the state title.

Nielsen carded a 3-over 75 to top the field of 48 golfers.

Roncalli’s Ramsey Johnsen (78) and Lucas Schaefbauer (79) were second and third, respectively.

Dell Rapids’ Mason Schmidt and Sisseton’s Blake Nielsen both shot 81 to round out the top five.

Gunner St. John and Noah Puetz paced the Cossacks with matching 82s, putting them in sixth and seventh, respectively.

Westin Trenhaile fired an 85 while placing 13th and Nate Buisker was 16th after carding an 88 to round out Sioux Valley’s team score. Logan Steffensen (99) was 27th.

The Class A State Boys’ Golf Tournament is Monday-Tuesday, Oct. 2-3, at Dakota Dunes Country Club.
