GROTON – All five Cossacks placed in the top 18 as Sioux Valley won the Region 1A Boys’ Golf Tournament on Monday at Olive Grove.
The Cossacks posted a team score of 329 for an 11-stroke victory.
Madison (340) and Sisseton (342) took second and third, respectively, to also qualify for the state tourney.
Aberdeen Roncalli (352) ended up fourth but had four individuals advance, so it will be eligible to win the state title.
The Redmen’s Nate Nielsen defeated Cossack junior Nate Buisker on the first hole of a playoff to earn medalist honors after both golfers carded 3-over-par 75s.
The Cavaliers’ Lucas Schaefbauer placed third at 78.
The top 29 finishers in the 49-player field qualified for state.
Sioux Valley senior Westin Trenhaile took fourth with an 80.
Senior Noah Puetz (85) finished eighth and junior Logan Steffensen (89) was 15th to complete the Cossacks’ team tally.
Also for Sioux Valley, senior Trent Hiltunen (91) ended up 18th.
The Class A State Boys’ Golf Tournament is Monday, Oct. 1-Tuesday, Oct. 2, at Rocky Run in Dell Rapids.
