Coyote volleyball sweeps Jackrabbits, 3-0

BROOKINGS – The South Dakota State volleyball team dropped its eighth-straight match Monday as the Jackrabbits were swept by South Dakota.

SDSU and USD went back forth in the beginning of the first set. The Jacks were up 11-10 when the Coyotes went on a 5-0 run to go up 15-11. SDSU then went on a 5-0 run of its own to go up 16-15. 

The ‘Yotes answered with a 7-0 run and took the first set 25-19. The score was tied 7-7 in the second set when USD went on a 6-0 run. The ‘Yotes lead grew to 19-9 and they took set number two 25-13.

SDSU led set three 7-3, but USD came back and tied it 8-8. The Coyotes then went on a 7-1 run to go up 15-9. USD’s lead grew to 21-13 and the ‘Yotes took the third set 25-15.

The Jacks had 29 kills compared to USD’s 44. The ‘Yotes had 39 assists and 54 digs. The Jacks finished with 29 assits and 43 digs. SDSU had 22 hitting errors and USD had nine.

Crystal Burk led SDSU with 10 kills, 12 digs and three blocks. Akeela Jefferson had nine kills. Tatum Pickar had 19 digs and Carly Wedel had 21 assists.

The ‘Yotes were led by Elizabeth Juhnke who had 12 kills and 11 digs. Sami Slaughter had 10 kills and five digs. Madison Jurgens finished with 32 assists and Lolo Weidman had 17 digs.

USD won Sunday’s match 3-1 and has now won 13-straight against the Jacks. SDSU’s last win against the Coyotes came in 2015.

SDSU is now 2-8 overall and 2-7 in the Summit League. The Jacks will play at Omaha Friday and Saturday. Friday’s match is set to begin at 7 p.m., and Saturday’s match will start at 6 p.m.
