Dolphin girls grab lead on Day 1 of Class B state meet

SIOUX FALLS – Two-time defending champion Deubrook Area had a solid opening performance at the Class B State Girls’ Track and Field Meet on Friday at Howard Wood Stadium.

The Dolphins won a pair of events while picking up 45 team points.

Ipswich is second at 42, followed by Colman-Egan (24) in third and Estelline/Hendricks (21) in fourth. Arlington totaled 12 points on Day 1.

Dolphins

Deubrook won the 4x800-meter relay for the fourth consecutive year.

Eighth-grader Ellie Olsen, senior Shaylee DeBeer, sophomore Andrea Vandermeer and senior Josie Olsen crossed in a time of 9 minutes, 48.59 seconds.

DeBeer and Josie Olsen were members of all four victorious teams; Vandermeer was a member for the third time; and Ellie Olsen made her state meet debut in the event.

DeBeer won the triple jump with a mark of 36 feet, 2 inches on Friday. She also qualified second for today’s 300-meter hurdles final.

Josie Olsen was runner-up in the 800 in 2:22.64 – .71 off the lead.

Senior Ashley Vandermeer placed second in the triple jump at 34-7 1/4 and fourth in the long jump with a leap of 15-11 1/4. She was the three-time defending state champion in the triple.

Vandermeer qualified eighth for the 200-meter dash finals.

Ellie Olsen ended up fifth in the 3,200 in 12:11.65.

Josie Olsen, Miranda Moravetz, Ashley Vandermeer and DeBeer had the fastest qualifying time in the 4x400 relay.

Notes: Cortney Bauman was the fourth member of Deubrook’s 4x800 squad in 2018 and 2017, while she and Emily Koenig teamed with DeBeer and Josie Olsen in 2016. … Deubrook’s time of 9:48.59 in the 4x800 was its best at the state meet during the four-year championship run. … The Dolphins won each of the past two team titles after placing second to Ipswich in 2016.

Hawks

Eighth-grader Josie Mousel successfully defended her title in the high jump, clearing 5 feet, 4 inches.

She cleared the winning mark on her first attempt after getting over 5-3 – her winning mark a year ago – on her second try.

Olivia Baumberger, a senior, was the long jump champ with a mark of 16-10.

Mackenzie Hemmer finished fifth in the triple jump at 33-11.

Redhawks

Junior Christine Nefzger was the pole vault champion, clearing 10-9 on her third attempt to seal the crown.

Kaytlyn Hawley was third in the shot put (37-11 3/4) and Sophie Johnson placed fourth in the pole vault (9-6).

Cardinals

Hadley Carlson dueled with Mousel in the high jump, but came up an inch short.

She cleared 5-3 on her first attempt but came up empty an inch higher.

Jayna Haufschild was fifth in the pole vault (9-0).
