TORONTO – With the second seed spot in District 5B on the line, the Dolphins did just enough to down Castlewood, 42-38, in Dakota Valley Conference girls’ basketball action on Tuesday.
Deubrook Area led 17-13 after the first eight minutes and was still up, 22-20, at halftime. The Dolphins added a point to the spread for a 31-28 advantage through three and then tacked on another point with an 11-10 run in the fourth for the final margin.
Cortney Bauman scored a game-high 25 points to go along with three rebounds and three steals to lead the Dolphins, who improved to 12-2 on the season and 5-0 in the DVC. Emily Koenig added seven points, six takeaways and four boards while Shaylee DeBeer chipped in with six points and four rebounds. Amy Vandermeer and Ashley Vandermeer contributed two points apiece to finish off the scoring as Amy had a pair of steals and Ashley pulled down four boards, as well.
Regan Benike posted a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds, to go along with three steals and an assist for Castlewood, which dropped to 6-4 overall and 3-2 in league play. Abby Strait netted 13 points and dished out four assists as Alayna Benike finished with 10 points and Brooke Bruinsma had two markers.
The shooting statistics were nearly identical as Deubrook Area finished 15-of-42 from the field for 36 percent while the Warriors made 15-of-36 (42 percent) as both teams knocked down three 3-pointers.
The Dolphins’ edge at the free-throw line proved to be the deciding factor as Deubrook Area made 9-of-15 while Castlewood converted on 5-of-8 attempts.
The Warriors won the rebound battle, 31-20, but that was evened out as Castlewood committed 22 turnovers – nine more than the home team.
On Thursday, Castlewood travels to Hayti to face Hamlin while the Dolphins play host to Colman-Egan on Friday in White.
