RAPID CITY – Seventh-seeded Deubrook Area capped its second appearance in school history with a 25-22, 25-14, 21-25, 25-16 defeat of Faith to place seventh in the Class B State Volleyball Tournament on Saturday at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center.

The Dolphins, who won the title in 1998, finished the year with a 26-9 record.

“I am so proud of these kids,” said Deubrook coach Rachelle DeBeer. “I am so proud of their efforts and proud of these seniors and their leadership.

“It is fun to end our season on a win. Only four teams in Class B get to do that.”

Shaylee DeBeer had a standout all-around match with 14 kills, four service aces, 2 1/2 blocks (one solo), 15 set assists and 15 digs.

Ashley Vandermeer finished with 10 kills, 1 1/2 blocks, an ace and 10 digs.

Mattie Nepodal and Sarah Urevig both had five kills, Cortney Bauman added three and Shelby Andrews two.

Bauman, an all-tournament team honoree, posted a match-best 24 digs and Tori Berndt added 15. Urevig notched 17 set assists.

It marked the final high school match for the Dolphins’ Berndt, Bauman, Andrews, Cassie Quail and Samantha Sween.

The eighth-seeded Longhorns (21-14), making their fifth state tourney appearance, got nine kills and 1 1/2 blocks (one solo) from Mikenzey Miller.

Championship

 Northwestern 3, Warner 1

In the championship matchup many have been waiting for for more than a decade, top-seeded and defending champion Northwestern defeated No. 3 Warner 25-17, 23-25, 25-20, 28-26.

The championship matchup between the former District 1B rivals was finally made possible by the introduction of the Sweet 16 format in Class B volleyball this season.

Northwestern and Warner are both in Region 1B now and advanced to the regional final before being reseeded for the Sweet 16. The Wildcats allowed 32 total points in a sweep of No. 16 Alcester-Hudson, while the Monarchs gave up 33 points in a sweep of No. 14 Bridgewater-Emery.

Since 1992, one of the two schools have been in the state tournament every year except 1995. They’ve combined to reach the title match 24 times with 15 titles in 27 tourney appearances – Northwestern has 18 appearances (15 finals with 10 titles) and Warner has nine appearances (nine finals with five titles).

Getting out of District 1B was usually the toughest part, until now.

For the Wildcats (35-1), Caitlyn Fischbach had 19 kills and 3 1/2 blocks (one solo).

Riley Grandpre added 18 kills and a block assist.

Evy Peterson tallied seven kills, two aces, 1 1/2 blocks (one solo) and 14 digs. Sydney Schell chipped in with seven kills and 1 1/2 blocks (one solo).

Madalyn Groft contributed five kills, 1 1/2 blocks, 47 set assists and 13 digs. Peyton Groft came up with 25 digs, Addison Sparling 15 and Tya Weideman 14.

For the Monarchs (30-5), Laurie Rogers totaled 21 kills, an ace and a solo block. Peyton Ellingston contributed 16 kills and a block. Ashley Fischbach notched seven kills, two aces and 16 digs.

Morgan Rozell dished out 46 set assists. Laura Ochsner had 28 digs and Sydney Leidholt, who had four kills and an ace, added 23 digs.

Notes: It is worth noting that both teams participated in the state tournament in 2002; however, Warner qualified in the winter and Northwestern in the fall. It was the year volleyball switched seasons from winter to fall, as Harding County made history by winning two state titles in the same calendar year. … Northwestern’s lone loss this season was to Class A Parker in a three-set match. … Warner was beaten three times by Northwestern (swept on the road on Sept. 7 and in four sets at home on Sept. 21), once by Class A Madison and once by Western Christian, Iowa.
