Aug. 17, 1930 - Oct. 9, 2019
Donald McCaughey Smith was born Aug. 17, 1930 in Clark, SD, to McCaughey Smith and Helen Marie Cochran. He grew up in Clark and graduated from Clark High School in 1948. After that, he farmed near Elrod until pursuing higher education at SDSU in 1965. He earned two BAs in psychology and sociology. He then earned an MA in mental health counseling in 1972. He worked at SDSU as a student counselor and administrative director. He then worked as a drug and alcohol counselor at First Step Counseling in Brookings before retiring in 2015.
Don enjoyed hunting, woodwork, and spending time with family. Most of all, he loved helping people in any way he could. He donated most of the meat he hunted to food charities and anyone who needed it. His home was always open to anyone who needed a listening ear or a good cup of coffee.
He is survived by two daughters and four sons and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A celebration of Don’s life will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16, at Rude’s Funeral Home in Brookings followed by a lunch including his two favorite foods: cookies and ice cream.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that those who wish to make a donation to The Banquet in Don’s honor.
