Dorothy A. Holter, 80, of Brookings, died Monday, Nov. 20, 2017, at the Neighborhoods at Brookview in Brookings.

Funeral services are at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Rude’s Funeral Home in Brookings. Visitation will be held prior to the service beginning at  noon.

Dorothy A. Holter was born April 12, 1937, near Bruce, the daughter of Gerrit and Emma (Peterson) DeKnikker. Dorothy received her education in Oldham and Arlington. She married Rueben L. Holter on Nov. 11, 1955 in Pipestone, Minnesota. After their marriage the couple lived in many towns, including Oldham, Howard, Milroy, Minnesota, Renville, Minnesota, and Bruce until 1989, when they moved to Brookings after their retirement. Throughout those years, she held various jobs. Rueben died on Jan. 19, 1998, after 43 years of marriage.

Dorothy was a loving and giving person, always there for those who needed her. She would always lend an ear and show her loving support to them. Through all of this she maintained her humble demeanor. She enjoyed playing cards and a variety of games. She was an excellent cook and baker, making many dishes for her family to enjoy. More than anything, she cherished spending time with her two daughters and the special relationship they had. She dearly loved her family and friends.

Dorothy is survived by two daughters, Sherry (Paul) Hoy of Oldham and Lynn (John) Labat of Milroy, Minnesota; one grandson; four granddaughters; 11 great-grandchildren with one more due to arrive soon; two brothers, Rick (Janette) DeKnikker of Oldham and Darrel (Ruth) DeKnikker of Belle Fourche; a sister, Shirley Soden of Madison and six sisters-in-law, Cheryl DeKnikker, of Lake Preston and Pat DeKnikker of Madison, Neva Holter of Brookings, Carol Holter of Isanti, Minnesota, Carmen Heppler of Mitchell and Jean Holter of Apple Valley, Minnesota.

She was preceded in death by her husband, three brothers, Lyle, Duane and Kenneth (Jeannie); one sister, Darlene (Bob) and one brother-in-law, Ron Soden.
